Roberto Martinez discussion

I should point out that i'm obviously not happy with our current position. But I refuse to get all wet about it as it's not where we've finished, and even more so as the manager is certainly not going anywhere soon. If we are here when it actually matters, then I might be a bit more annoyed.

I can't beleive that finishing 5th is the benchmark either. That was over and above expetations for me. Especially when you look at things like squad depth, money spent and so on. If you expect us to finish 5th this season (or higher i've seen some say) I just don't see it as realistic i'm afraid.

Think we should always be looking at trying to stay in the hunt for top 4 mate, there isn't in this league 4 teams that are massively better than us due to various reasons, the difference in quality between say - us, spurs, the rs, United is not that great that form and momentum can mean any could pull away

I Think its a valid point, you are saying we are bhind spurs I am saying in terms of quality of player we are not, and what else counts?

I've not said anything about Spurs. You think it's possible to just go out and get any players from other teams it seems and we'd become instantly better.

This isn't football manager Ian.

I just don't see it mate. I can probably understand why some think we could, but we never do bar one season where it was a pretty low point total.

Even though Leighton Baines said they worked on corners specifically last week?
Big thrills for noddy. It should be a sustained and prolonged part of the make up of any team, how to defend and attack in equal measure, like I said we got 16 clean sheets in his first 38 and we haven't had that in the following 70ish games. That cannot or at least should not be ignored.

Thats not what I said or meant, I meant that to say spurs are ahead of us despite their manager having 12 months less with his squad and their players overall are no better than ours is just wrong, all in the defence of Martinez who simply isn't getting the results we hope for.

Can we get in a specialist set peice coach?
Or is the way we defend corners alot down to how the players know that the goalie will stay on his line even if the ball is a yard away from him

I never said any thing about Spurs Ian.

You seemingly think footballs like some sort of fantasy league.

Well you'll be made up with Martinez then. I would take about 3 maybe 4 of Spurs Strongest xi and put them in to ours playing the 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 that we and they play. Don't do down our squad to fit your shambolic expextation of our club.

Maybe you'd also get us Messi and Neuer while you're out there on plant lar lar, could pick us up Yarmolenko some of the posters in the transfer thread would be ever so greatful.

Apologies, just realised it wasn't you who mentioned Spurs being ahead of us, it was because you replied to a post that replied to someone who did.

I enjoy (some of) the football too, and I've just said that he deserves credit for the things he has done well. To me that is just common sense, not something that even needs to be discussed. I have no agenda at all, other than to see Everton do well.

I'd had enough of Moyes by the time he left so you won't find me desperately trying to compare him favourably to Martinez, but in the interest of balance I would say that if he could convince good footballers like Pienaar, Arteta, Gibson, Donovan etc to join, then there's a decent chance he could have brought in the likes of Barry and Cleverley. Obviously neither of us know for sure but that would be my opinion. I doubt he would have brought in Deulofeu and Martinez gets a lot of credit in my book for that one.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were trying to say with regard to attracting players, but in my defence it's easy to do when a number of posters on here attempt to convince us all that Martinez isn't to blame for anything and we're lucky that he agreed to be paid a huge amount of money to lead us to draws with relegation fodder. As i've said, i like him in the main, but i'm yet to be convinced that he's really taking us places. Others clearly are convinced, and I can assure you that nobody will be happier than me if they turn out to be correct.

Fair play mate. I'm advocating balance too, not pure pro-Martinez.

That my expectations are different to yours effects a definition of them as "shambolic"? Ok mate

Again apologies, but this is a bit silly now, Im not talking about signing players, I'm stating the reason why I don't think its unreasonable for us to be aiming for whatever Spurs are aiming for based on squad quality.
