Roberto Martinez discussion

All the more reason to work on it on the training pitch.
Suspect on corners ? Then practice defending them time after time until it becomes second nature and everyone knows their job.

Think half the problem mate is that even if we did practise corners now, we'd be taking them against our defence and we can't take a decent attacking one - which may explain why we are shocking at both a little lol

We are performing though. Playing quite well whereas we were genuinely crap last season and had the results to show for it. Watching our team for the last 5 or 6 games has been scintillating and I think a lot of us are very confident the results will follow soon enough.

My post which was quoted said if we finish 8th or lower. That for me would be a second consecutive season of under performing.

If you disagree, then you acknowledge our ambition has gone backward since Moyes left.

Got to sort out the defence to win you games. That is the concern.

But he has surely.
Chances were at a premium last year, whilst this year we've created a plethora.
In order for a team to win they need to score goals.
So surely that problem has been resoundingly resolved.

How much does an unsettled defence and a limited Tim Howard have to play in us conceding goals this season?
We've had very little stability due to injuries at the back.

Hence why I mentioned the first 3 games only as being similar to this season. Arsenal in particular we played superbly until the final 10 minutes. Against Chelsea our attacking play was excellent as well. But the fact we conceded 6 made Martinez rethink his strategy. Attacking was not an issue in those 3 games - 7 goals scored in 3 matches, including Arsenal and Chelsea.

The reality is that in nearly a year and a half now he has been unable to set up a successful defence.

The rest of December and January will show whether it really is a matter of defensive injuries/a bit of luck to kill the opposition off, or whether we are now a mid table side. This was when we hit our big slump in form last year.

Yeah I agree with that, I just think when you have an inexperienced back four with players who haven't played in the league or are still learning their trade, no matter how hard you work on stuff in training you'll still see to some extent the mistakes we have on the pitch when we defend.
Set pieces shouldn't come under that bracket though.

No, but context/ambitions is considered.

An Everton side underperforming for two seasons straight would be different to a Norwich side losing 1-0 at half time to Everton - as the eventual result proved.
You call some of the stuff we're playing 'underperformance'?!

It's football from the Gods. Results, could be better, of course, but there's nothing wrong with this team a rub of the green and a new GK cant make unbeatable. We're a better pure football team than anyone in this league at the moment.

Context would surely be acknowledging 4 of you most important players are all 22 or younger and like all players of such an age and experience their form will rise and fall at times. Context would also let us admit that we've suffered a horrendous run of injuries to our best and most experienced defenders all at once and have at times played with an under 21 esq backline.

Win, win situation if we do practice 'em then.
We might get better at both ends of the pitch !
