Roberto Martinez discussion

I never wanted Moyes back, but keep it on man.

His position is not untouchable but in the circumstance Everton find themselves as a club he is going about it in the right way and showing signs of progress.

He has set the club up from the youth teams to his first team with strategy that is designed to be sustainable and more competitive against those with greater resources in the medium to long term.

Progress not coming as fans like shouldn't lead to the geordieisation of our fanbase.

Moyes got 11 years. Martinez has had three. In the past couple of games I've seen football as good as I've seen at Everton for a long time. It's a positive indicator of this strategy maybe is capable of delivering some form of tangible success in a sustainable manner.

Obviously Sky Sports wants you to be dead angry and show that anger when things don't our way.

To be doing it now is trite.

Disappointing day and week Evertonians. Turn and face.

Mate, you've completely ignore the point of many on here. The flaws that we have now can be rectified on the training pitch. The mistake we have can be straighten out by drills and practices as well.

We're seeing a prolong consistent defensive frailty that cannot be fully classified as inexperience. We are as vulnerable to crosses as we were last year what was being done to rectify it? Who had the responsibility to change this? Excusing Martinez from all these criticism and simply outline it as inexperience is just silly.

We had 21 points after 16 games last season. 23 after 16 this time around.

He hasn't turned it around at all. We are a lot better going forward, but still a completely unbalanced side. If you look back to the first games of last season (Leicester, Arsenal, Chelsea) they weren't all that different from our last few games. After the Chelsea game, Martinez then tried to sacrifice some attacking play in favour of a more solid defence and that didn't go too well.
But he has surely.
Chances were at a premium last year, whilst this year we've created a plethora.
In order for a team to win they need to score goals.
So surely that problem has been resoundingly resolved.

How much does an unsettled defence and a limited Tim Howard have to play in us conceding goals this season?
We've had very little stability due to injuries at the back.

If we had Neuer, De Gea or another top keeper then i think this would settle the defence down...

Snag is we probably wont get a new one till the summer...

Aye, it's a significant problem. We can rave all we like about Stones, Fumes, Jags, Baines, Seamus, Galloway etc but they're conceding goals and this isn't due to their ability. The problem is poor defensive setup, lack of focus and sticking with a clearly past-it keeper who has little command of his 6-yard box.

Responsibility: Martinez.

No I'm not excusing it at all mate, I'm putting it into context of him building a great young side. That's my point kind off.

The reactions on here to any adverse result are over the top.

The Internet is full of bad bells, we should have won that 4 or 5-1, Martinez never missed them chances, the players did.

We are playing cracking football at the moment just not taking our chances, when it clicks it will be boss.
We all agree we need to tighten up at the back, but let's not go all manic and blame the manager for his defensive set up.
The set up for the corner was fine, players not jumping is criminal.
I still believe we are trying to be a progressive side, trying to play and win playing great football.

All the more reason to work on it on the training pitch.
Suspect on corners ? Then practice defending them time after time until it becomes second nature and everyone knows their job.

....it is the goals conceeded when the defence is suposedly set up to defend a corner which is absolutely killing us.

The failure to defend corners has cost us a goal in each of the last three games.....goals which were the difference between winning and drawing :(

edit : Just seen the above, spot on mate.

If it meant we started winning games then yes.
I'm not sure that it would.

I see no reason why individual errors can't be eradicated as our young defence develops and we retain an emphasis on attack.

It's killing off teams that has been our downfall this season.

Clear your schedule @davek. Gonna be a busy few days :)
Busy few days? What, defending a manager who's put together the best football team we've had for 25 years and has us in 6th place in the league and a SF of the LC?

Hmmm, how would anyone manage defending such a poor showing?

Lol to infinity.

Thank you Roberto, thank you so much.

agree there Zat...a proper keeper might be all the focus-coaching the back 4 needs.

We need to sign one in January, for if we don't qualify for Europe this season we will lose Del, Rom & Stones.

No, but context/ambitions is considered.

An Everton side underperforming for two seasons straight would be different to a Norwich side losing 1-0 at half time to Everton - as the eventual result proved.

We are performing though. Playing quite well whereas we were genuinely crap last season and had the results to show for it. Watching our team for the last 5 or 6 games has been scintillating and I think a lot of us are very confident the results will follow soon enough.
