Even if it we where going to do business we wouldn't be sending out 10 players. A squad can't thrive with that level of turnover. Look how long it is taking Juventus to get going this season. We'd set ourselves back so far doing that

To be fair, we could get rid of Hibbert, Pienaar, McGeady and McAleny without signing replacements given how few games they have played. They also have players in front of them who have had limited minutes (Browning, Lennon, Mirallas).

That leaves 6 others who you could debate. Personally, I'd just move on Howard (sign a new first choice GK and keep Robles as back up) and Naismith (8mm or thereabouts is probably worth taking and putting toward someone else who plays across the front 4 like Yarmalenko).

2 players for each position:

GK - Robles
LB - Baines / Garbutt
LCB - Jagielka / Mori / Galloway
RCB - Stones / Browning / Holgate
RB - Coleman
DM - Barry / Besic
CM - McCarthy / Cleverley
AM - Barkley
LW - Kone
RW - Deulofeu / Lennon
CF - Lukaku

This is what things "should" look like by the summer with new signings added on top, as most posts on here recognise we need to improve the squad in the following areas;

GK
RB
Playmaker
LW
Forward

This means that these players could be moved on:

Howard -
Hibbert - Contract expiring
Oviedo - Contract expiring
Gibson
Osman - Contract expiring
Pienaar - Contract expiring
McAleny
McGeady
Mirallas
Naismith

We supposedly had money for Yarmolenko and through selling 'some' players in Jan should have a decent pot which we can use to sign 2 players and possibly a loan.

In the summer we should get in a new keeper and another player and a loan.

That would mean 10 players out and 5 players in over 2 windows. Better to have 5 players who can make the first team than 10 who wouldnt get a game but take home decent wages...
kone isn't a left winger mate.

also.

Liverpool had a mass recruitment like the one you suggest, failed. spurs did it and failed, Sunderland nearly went down when they did it, qpr did go down when they did, see the pattern?

in fact buying players en mass would only lead to us selling them all again over a 2 year period because clubs who do that are simply buying failure

Not many of us here, us contributing to this excellent forum, have much wherewithal regarding the machinery of anything to do with the componentry comprising the engine block of a contemporary football club . That the majority of people here on GOT intrinsically understand (and accept) this fundamental acquiescence, this nod toward "really, I know eff all' makes this the best football forum on the world wide web.

I'd like to see a few more concede ground to the manager, chairman, CEO when it comes to internal matters...but I agree mate....I think....

Especially when Man Utd have done pretty much what some on here are clamouring for - sold all their experienced backups and spent the money on a few expensive young players putting them under huge pressure to perform, with academy kids thrown in at the deep end when injuries occur.

Might work in the long term but lot of ugly football and dubious results in the short term.
I disagree with you and USA blue
We need to take gamble in jan
I can't see it happening like
But what the point of having a 10mil? Player mirallas on the bench never getting a game
And 8 mil for Naismith Ffs that's a no brainier

If that money buys us another top class attacking player
I will say yarmalenko as he's the main player we have been linked with then we should do it

We all know top 4 is a long shot
But it's never going to happen with Kone or Naismith or Osman playing
We will be 8th or 9th IMO

But add a class player with experience and more composure could be the difference
At times geri Ross and rom show their age
And they need help that likes of Kone can't give them

After the window there will be 4months left of the season
We can't sort the squad out in the summer with the new TV money

But I don't see the point of having a so called strong bench to finish mid table

As for Utd
They have loads of injuries if they didn't they would have 100mil of talent on the bench and 50mil
In the stands

There is a wage to turnover rule though I'm not sure what it is
But we would probably need to get wages of the bill before adding to it

i don't think we'll end up with yarmolenko at all now, to be honest. He's at a club in a better position, let's be honest and he will surely get better offers next summer.

He is even with his new contract earning a whopping 50k roughly pw, as for better offers, don't see why people assume that, he was down to the last 6 months of his contract without anyone else making a better offer than us, whats exactly changed?

Mirallas and Naismith will both be off this January, both making noise about wanting more game time or moving on, neither will get it due to the current form of players starting ahead of them, Martinez will have learned from the Eto'o and Distin fiascos hopefully

Mirallas is 8 - 10m easy. We knocked back 8m for Naismith so surely his price has remained the same. McGeady gets in 2 - 3m, and Gibson the same.

That's 22 odd million and 120k a week minimum off the wages, with only one of the players really 'missed' if he goes.

Surely that money could tempt a club to part with a player who'd really make a difference to our first team.

Also incredibly excited to finally see the back of wage-stealers Pienaar and Hibbert in the summer. Perhaps the club can come to some sort of deal in the meantime to cancel their contracts. The money wasted on them has been unbelievable for a club in our financial position.

I think it would, but not in the middle of the season.

Money talks at the end of the day.

Say a miracle happens and we get a massive haul between now and Jan 1st, is it worth paying the extra few million for a player who might push us into the top four? Definitely. Especially in the knowledge that piles of money are making their way to us next season in TV deals.

Obviously won't happen, but other teams do and have done it in the past.

I imagine the squad will stay exactly how it is, maybe one player will go (Naismith), and we'll drop off the pace around Feb/March and finish 8th.
