Tim Howard

A fair point...but Howard has also had a superior career. If you want Begovic, you are choosing the "less proven but currently better rated" man. My argument is that Begovic is neither currently, despite popular consensus saying he is.

Off topic: would you trade Gerry for Hazard? I think I would but Deulofeu has made it a tough call (Hazard too)

I wouldn't trade him but that's for personal reasons and feelings that I have to keep buried deep inside.

Deulofeu is great but is that a serious question?

So hey, how about letting this thread spiral down into the dark depressing abyss that is "discussing potential replacements for howard in a childish FM-like style"?

Actually, that would be a significant improvement over what the last few pages in here have been about.

Anyway, Kasper Schmeichel. I'd have him.

Why? Or, why do you think he'd be a good target to go after? He doesn't strike me as an elite difference maker, he's not exactly a young prospect with lots of room for improvement, and I don't think Leicester would be too keen on letting him go. So what makes him a good player to try to get?

He's talented, promising, about to come of age where keepers start getting better, would play for Everton above Leicester and is better than Howard.

Promising? He's 29. Goalkeepers age differently than outfield players, yeah, but I can't think of any that went from okay to really good after they hit thirty.

I also think it's debatable that he's better than Howard. He's let in 20 goals this season, after all. Yeah, he's exposed by his defense a lot, but so is Howard, and Howard's made quite a few more saves than Schmeichel has this season. Last season was probably the only season of his career that you could say Schmeichel was better than Howard.

Obviously, I think he's going to be better going forward than Howard -- that's a pretty easy prediction for someone of Howard's age. Do you really think he'll be worth what Leicester would ask for him, though? Especially compared to someone like, say, Szczesny, whose team is actively trying to get rid of him (and actually is at the age where keepers start getting better)?

Quick fire answers below:

Most goalkeepers get better with age. Schmeichel, Seaman, Martyn, Khan, Buffon, Van Der Saar all got better with age. His defence in front of him is pretty woeful. He's better than Szczesny.

I'm not saying I want Schmeichel to replace Howard by the way, nor am I saying one is better than the other overall, but at this moment in time I would take Schmeichel over Howard.

As for money? Who's arsed? Is it coming out of your pocket? Money in the bank doesn't kick a ball into the net, or save it. Fact is we need someone pronto, and if we have to spend, we have to spend, it's about time the board pulled their finger.

The club isn't going to spend an unlimited amount of money, and any money spent on a goalkeeper isn't spent somewhere else. More to the point, I don't think Schmeichel is as good a value for the money he would cost as some other goalkeeper would be. Martinez seems to have a transfer policy of not signing players who are regulars for Premier League teams, and that seems like an awfully sensible policy, since all of those players cost a good 50% more than someone of equivalent talent in a different situation.
