Tim Howard

It wasn't his fault we lost yesterday, he was just as rank as the rest of them. But in the last two games especially, the difference really has been the two keepers.

Against Liverpool, Mignolet makes two brilliant saves while Howard becomes invisible for a corner landing three inches away. Yesterday De Gea did the same, excellently thwarting us during a solid 20 minutes of genuine pressure, before Howard dived out of the way to let the goal in that ended the game.

I shudder to think how many more points we would have picked up since the start of last season if he was competent.

Very selective recollection of what happened there in my opinion. He made a couple of saves one on one to keep the scoreline at 0-3. Not for one minute saying Howard is what we need now but people seem to ignore the good he does.

He has had some terrible moments recently. The Ings goal was pathetic and so was the second for West Brom, but he wasn't fully to blame. Barkley and the rest of the defence are just as bad when it comes to defending and preventing these goals.

Rooney was 1 on 1 the other day so was favourite to score.

Everyone bar Lukaku was awful on Saturday but the main culprits for the defeat were the likes of Jagielka and Coleman. Howard wasn't the reason we lost the other day.

This is true and a very valid point.

It's just the way he handles these situations, and the Schneiderlein goal. It makes him look like a bloody amateur, and even that's being kind.

Whilst Howard wasn't the reason we lost, he certainly didn't, and consistently doesn't help us win.

No point making great saves when you're already 3-0 down, and you were at least partly to blame for some of those goals.

Sure Rooney was 1 on 1 for his goal, but it was straight at Howard, and he flapped in true Howard fashion. Reminiscent of the Demba Ba star jump.

The Rooney one reminded me of the Aguerro goal at Goodison the year Liverpool thought they'd won the league. At the time I thought he let that one in but I'm not so sure now.

The only decent keeper we could get in the prem is butland.

As ferguson showed theres risks with foreign keepers like taibi...but i think the germans seem to have some good ones.

Some indicates more than 1. And he was partly to blame for what exactly? Not looking better on Rooney's goal? He needs replaced, but this goes back to the point of over-exaggeration.

My beef with Howard is that he seems to know he's lost a step. And to compensate, he doesn't trust himself and guesses too much. He gets caught leaning and tries to anticipate too much because his reactions aren't what they were before where he could stand up and instinctively make saves.

He may have looked silly for Rooney's goal, but he's not to blame for any of them, and truth be told, Rooney 1v1 scores against any keeper 7 of 10 times.

It reminded me of Stracqualursi's goal against Chelsea that time, didn't really hit it anywhere and because the keeper had committed himself way too early it still squirmed in despite being an appalling shot. It's a worry how small Howard makes himself for one on ones

Yes, Howard's default one on one position is to be falling backwards, looking away from the ball, diving one way too early. Invariably wherever the shot hits him it goes in.

He's just not very good at anything anymore.

Butland i was amazed we didnt sign him when he went to Stoke, shocking.

Howard is the only one i think and as suggested above, if we could replace with Butland then that would be a masterstroke.

If the Yarmolenko money was there he should have used it on Butland.

We need to get in some cash to sign Butland and Yarmolenko.

We really need to try and replace him with Butland.

Clearly we need a GK and at the moment 90%+ of us seen to want Butland. He would fit in perfectly in terms of age and ability, for backup i suppose Griffiths is around the England U20 squad.

Hopefully over this and next season we see alot of players moved out and replaced with youth or top young players such as Butland signed.

I wouldnt be surprised if Martinez had the money to go after both Grealish and Butland to keep building on our excellent foundations.

I also wonder if Moyes took over at Villa would he play him...

Butland,Karius or another player to compliment Stones/Barkley/Lukaku spine...

Absolutely and also someone like butland or karius as 15 years of value.

We get it.

Joel Robles has made 22 appearances for us in the last 2+ seasons. That's far more than most backup keepers get, and definitely enough to say he's not an upgrade over Howard. Everything bad we say about Howard can be applied to Robles, with the addition of him not being a terribly good shot stopper.

robles' distribution is a hell of a lot better. he's also better at crosses. he flaps at long range shots, but he is quite commanding from crosses. i think he's easily the better of the two atm and he's not even that good.
