He said that the week before he was bought by Liverpool - when the reports were in the media it was happening - that Watford played Liverpool at Vicarage Road and the away supporters threw bananas at him and called him all the names under the sun.

Happened at every football match in the country back then. Pretty much anyrate.

What criteria is that based on?

Closing your eyes and wishing really hard?

The Alternative Premier League Table 2015-16

For those of you who are new to the APLT, or those who need a reminder of the model, the APLT makes an assumption that in order to win the league title, a team needs to win 90 points for the season. This can be achieved by winning all home matches, the seven ‘easiest’ away matches (the three promoted teams and the 14th-17th ranked teams from the previous season) and draw the 12 remaining away matches. I refer to these as the ‘par results’. As in golf, par will be achieved more often than not, but sometimes points are dropped or gained in relation to par.

The fixture list below for the top seven teams from last season indicates the ‘hardest’ matches which are all par 1s, with the remaining fixtures all par 3s.

Over the season, I will plot the results in relation to par for all the teams featured on a graph (an example of last season’s completed graph is below). If a team plays to par, the line on the graph will be horizontal, whereas dropped points will lead to a negative gradient and gained points a positive gradient.

The green depreciating line reflects a drop of 0.5 points per game (dropping to 19 points below par by game 38) to illustrate a 71 point season, a reasonable estimation of the points needed to achieve a top four finish. Any team with ambitions to finish top four needs to be above this green line by the end of the season.

I can't see them making any significant improvement even if they replace B-Rod,they have an average squad,Mignolet wouldnt look out of place in the current Sunderland squad,Clyne is a decent player but nothing special, the 2 centre halfs awful plus the replacement Sakho looks like Bambi on ice whenever I see him play,Gomez I think will become a very good player
Midfield,we moan about Barry but imagine lining up with Lucas,Milner and Henderson in the centre,Coutinho is good player but
tends to blow hot and cold,Benteke decent but cost way too much,Sturridge is never going to play a lot of games
Any manager coming in is going to struggle with them,as for new owners I can't see any forth coming even if them der yanks
want to sell up

I just hope FSG are around for many more years to come as LFC owners. They'll never get back to the top under them. They require a sale to a person or group who have City-level reserves of spending capacity. They're well capable of attracting one too. It is just a matter of time before that happens unfortunately.

Hopefully our dead weight is shifted soon enough and we can find some level of investment ourselves.

I dont think so mate, they have a brand but it doesnt have the contempory gloss Utd, Chelsea and City have. Bar legacy international fans i dont think they have done a lot to modernise it. Someone wil have a crack but i cant see someone who would make that much difference wanting to come against established PL owners and invest the billions likely required.

They are somewhere caught between trying to compete with a "big club mentality" and trying to develop a "smaller club strategy" they have an identity crisis as they publicaly and privately have to acheive both. Problem being they live of Utds, City, Arsenals and Chelsea leftovers or scraps, while we, Swansea, Southampton have models in place for years in terms of identfying, nurturing and developing talent. Danny Ings FFS,

They will stagnate for me, with an occasional cup run.

What the actual F does all this mean.

My head went reading that.

The gloss has come off them in the past generation (one CL win and that's about it...not winning your own domestic league for 26 years is a disaster for them). However, they do still have global profile, maybe not in the same league as United, Chelsea, Arsenal these days, but they could attract people with long pockets who wish to break into the biggest sporting circus in the world for an almighty image boost. There's a lot of capital out there not invested and such clubs offer a safe haven for them. DIC had them, then walked away from them because of Moores' greed. Then Gillett and Hicks tried to exploit the situation and FSG only picked them up at rock bottom because they were the one's willing to pick up the pieces and clear out the mess. Next change of hands will be a lot more smoother than that, and the stadium will have been reconfigured too.

Unfortunately, I agree. One small example will show why.

I know absolutely zippo about Merican Baseball, but I know the NY Yankees, well, know of the NY Yankees. For all I know, they could have won the league or world series every year for 26 years, or not had a sniff for 26 years.

But if baseball was expanding into the UK, thats who I would choose to sink my cash into.

Yankees are closer to United, Liverpool the Red Sox (eye ronically) I always thought

They've convinced themselves they are 4th in their alternative league........

Alternate reality.

Tomato Tomato. Liverpool are a well known "brand". You can argue the toss "why?", but they are. Probably a bigger one than City, at the moment.

And it is bloody annoying.
Historical successes, a lack of self depreciation (born of the success and handed down maybe) which then means self promotion and a large presence in the media. The occasional 'glorious' victory sustains it and they've been marketed as one of the biggies since PL inception.

I wouldn't say City are the same in terms of strength of brand but 5-10 years of success and the gap will narrow into insignificance. You only have to look at Chelsea to see how quickly it changes.

Yep. Spot on imo.
