Computer games.

I'm just going to pop random reviews in here for games in recent years that people may not have played, but they really should do so - or alternatively they may not have played, and should avoid like the plague.

Bioshock Infinite (2013)
PS3/X360/PC/MAC

This would get a perfect score from me if it wasn't for just one pretty major flaw - but we'll come to that later, because it is quite literally the only downside this otherwise perfect game has.

Yes, perfect. In an age where first-person shooters are giving up the ghost and binning single-player campaigns entirely (bloody Battlefront, I'm looking at you. Give me my Jedi story mode FFS), Bioshock Infinite proved not only could it be done well, but it can blow away anything else the genre has to offer in terms of offering a quintessential gaming experience.

The graphics are, of course, stunning, but it's the artistic direction which makes this game so good. You are drawn into this world hook, line and sinker - it's visual beauty contrasting sublimely with the ugly violence. Every character has depth, every plot point means something, and it all builds to a climactic finale that it would be an actual crime to spoil for you.

When people talk about video games as art and point to 'walking simulator' boring crap as examples of it, the reason I personally scorn at them is because of Bioshock Infinite - which is ACTUAL gaming art. A complete masterpiece, offering a totally immersive experience while giving you actual gameplay.

Which is why it's a bloody shame the actual shooting mechanics are so damn mediocre! For me, the core mechanics of a game are so central to the experience that it takes two whole points off the score. The gunplay isn't "bad" as such, just... average. The Vigors (basically magical FPS "Skyrim-esque" spells) aren't as impactful as the previous titles in the series and the guns are phoned in and lack any imagination and spark, which is doubly surprising given the inventiveness of the universe itself.

But it sort of doesn't matter. This is definitely a case of a game where the overwhelming positives drown out the one big negative, and does so with ease.

The game is a masterpiece. If you haven't played it, bloody hell, do so, and lament the fact that you probably won't play its' like again unless a Half Life 3 comes out, because the AAA gaming studios have decided that unless a game is multi-player and a military shooter, there's no point in making it. Urgh...

8/10

Question for those of you playing Elite: Do you use a joystick, and is one necessary?

One isn't necessary, but it is amazing with a joystick.

I use a T-Flight HOTAS X. Cheap, cheerful, and good value for the money, compared to other HOTAS solutions.

Mega geek moment I also use TrackIR5, which is head tracking (allows me to look around in the cockpit by moving my head). Not as sophisticated as Oculus, but pretty bloody good, and very intuitive.

Nice write up. I just went out and bought it :)
Loved the first 2 Bioshock games - amongst "best of generation."

I was trying to get into Skyrim in the last few weeks, but up until now (logged about 5 hrs) very little has happened, and to be honest I don't think I have the patience to work my way through a game this vast.

no - and it isn't necessary to upgrade your monitor, video card, get the best HOTAS you can find and start to look forward to when the Oculus is released commercially, but you will find yourself doing all of these things

i have an x52 and it shames me how much i enjoy elite, if it wasn't for the outright evil of ck2 and the napoleonic wars mod of mount and blade, i wouldn't play anything else
