John Stones transfer saga

On this occasion I think we sit back and praise the manager and the board

Praise on this occasion is deserved

Other arguments should be put to one side for the moment and we should be proud in what the club has done and how they have made a moral and financial stand
They have done this properly so far, yes, and we can applaud them for this particular thing.

We should not let this one positive cloud the clear problems though, this should not stop people from questioning why we aren't spending and why we aren't progressing off the pitch.

It's always a big question how the players' performance will change after a saga like this. I can tell a mini-version of this in Ferencváros just happened this summer. Our N.1 CB (what a coincindence) got an offer from an MLS club, he got 2 years left of his contract. But he wanted to go free because he was offered 3-4X times of money. He talked to the coach and said if we won't let him go he will play badly as he can't focus now. At this point our 3rd CB was injured badly in a training session, out for 3 months. Despite of this our coach kicked him out of team immediately after this. And the board managed to get money for him, but we had to start the league with only 1 proper CB. Eventually after our star CB left we started this season with 6/6 wins and team spirit is better than ever was. I don't know if refusing a request is a good idea: someone must have talked to Stones and visualize a very bright future...I hope he keeps his head clear otherwise who knows what can happen to him. I don't wanna see someone so talented messing his carrier up.

Not really. I'm looking at this from a season perspective, not the short term buzz of telling Jose et al to swing it.

We have £5M spent this summer.

That's it. Bottom line.

The board deserve nothing more than a boot in the bollocks.
Stick it in the board thread then

This thread should be how the Club has managed a very difficult situation, we have shown to be the classier of the two parties.

This.

When did it become acceptable to just retain what you have rather than improve upon it?

Standing still will not move you up the table. I bet Kenwright feels like he is on cloud 9 here. This window has been a disgrace by the board and we cannot afford many more of these.

When clubs like Crystal Palace and Stoke are outspending you in the transfer market after finishing above us, you know we're in trouble.

Progress, not stagnation.

The latter will beget the former...and there's the rub; the latter requires large spending (ie capital investment).

Is say on this occasion

Regardless of whatever you think of the board and it's failings, you can only applaud the club and their stance on this.

We said he's not for sale, and guess what....
HE'S NOT FOR SALE. AT ANY PRICE.
Yes, but where's the transfer money coming from?

I think a key difference is that Stones will need to be at his best to be in Hodgson's plans for Euros. Plus, Chelsea are buying him for his potential, so if he doesn't continue to improve then those doors may close for him next year.
