John Stones transfer saga

John Stones hasn't just decided, "oh I might go now actually" - it's all been down to Everton.

It's all been down to Mourinho, Sean. He was the one who unsettled the player through an orchestrated media campaign.

He must be laughing his arse off this evening at Evertonians fighting amongst themselves about whether it is Stones or the Everton board who are most to blame.

So we’ve reached a watershed – perhaps the biggest watershed we’ve ever had.

It’s difficult because we don’t know the real reasons behind Stones’ decision to put in a transfer request. We don’t know how long he’s wanted to leave, the reasons why? and how long the club has known.

So let’s exam the things we do know. The club in public appear to have acted impeccably since the first Chelsea bid – I’ve praised them as I genuinely thought we did not want to sell and he did not want to move.

Now we have to follow through our firm stance and quoted position “he’s not for sale”. Martinez on several occasions (albeit with less certainty as time has gone on), and even John Woods caught on camera on Sunday “I’m not selling, nor is Bill” – I assume he was referring to Stones not his personal holding in Everton….

If we hold firm then Martinez and Stones have to show their professionalism, find a solution and get Stones performing consistently at the level we know he can.

If we don’t stand firm and accept an offer from Chelsea or elsewhere then a huge can of worms are opened.

“We don’t have to sell to buy” – Martinez throughout the summer. The truth, lies or said in ignorance?

If we sell and do not spend, then why? Why do we need to liquidate our prime asset?

If we sell and buy some adequate but not thrilling squad members what does that say about our ambition, our desire to build on what we’ve developed? What does it say to the rest of our young talent about our real ambitions?

What does it say to potential investors? It tells them the club has been managed by asset strippers with limited ambition. That must be reflected in the price of the equity. Allowing Stones to be sold now will be very costly to shareholders as well as supporters that are only interested in the team and performance on the pitch.

It’s a huge few days ahead of the club. The decisions made in this time will say a huge amount about our future direction and prospects.

For the sake of all those that have worn the blue shirt, all those that have stood on the terraces for the last 137 years of our great history, the Board needs to make the right decision. Refuse Stones his move, make the purchases we require for a viable squad this season, seek investment or sell up.

I share your frustration. Evertonians are born not manufactured and I've bought my son his everton kits and strive to 'bring him up the right way' supporting the blues. All his friends living round here support utd or city (he's only 5 by the way) already his friends are trying to convince him to join the dark side (support city or utd). Maybe it would be easier if we lived on merseyside as he would be surrounded by more blues and family members that support the blues. The club needs to make a statement, either show some ambition or otherwise our current support will become discontented. But what message are we sending out to our future support, like your grandson and my son how the club is run.?

Your right in what you say this board needs to show ambition but don't hold your breath they haven't so far. we have two billionaires on the board
who have shown not one jot of ambition for this club they sit with their thumbs up their a**** doing nothing. The thing is it's not just Everton that frustrates me it' the sheer arrogance of the mega rich clubs that gets my back up, take the De,Bruyne player that city are trying to buy, not sure how much Chelsea bought him for but sold him for 18m because he didn't cut it in the prem, and now Man city are trying to buy him for nearly 50m without batting an eyelid it's crazy, take the lad they've just loaned to Juva bought last year not sure how much for but hardly ever plays then farmed out, they stack players who have no hope of playing and loan them out it's a disgrace. Mate it stinks to high heaven and because of the money generated in the prem nothing will get done have just have had enough of it.

Why are we talking like we are the only club who sells players....a selling club ?? Really ?? No more than Stoke, Liverpool, Man u, Chelsea....Every team sells players, especially when they are making 10 x they're initial investment. Football Clubs all over the world buy and sell players...were even looking to buy players ourselves...how could we if Clubs wont sell theyre best players for profit ? Thats just good business practice for where we are right now. Some of us seem to be forgetting were not the the rich Everton of old....were a poor relation now.

....slumps off to kick something.

I agree totally, the way he has gone about this whole thing is quite apalling. However, I think the board will be happy with the outcome.

Completely disagree. If he's only just changed his mind then he has clearly had his head turned by Jose Mourinho and the prospect of replacing John Terry, in which case it's Mourinho's vile media tactics that deserve the majority of the blame. If Stones has wanted to leave all this time and left it so late to put in a transfer request then it's John Stones not willing to forgo a loyalty bonus. Don't see how this can be completely down to the board at all.

Its only fantastic if they reinvest.

True. I have confidence though; only time we haven't really reinvested at all has been with Arteta.

I think we have been offered around that hence the request.

Every offer they've made has been published by Chelsea days in advance, the last offer was £30m last week. I doubt very much they've changed their tactics this late into the window and have upped it so dramatically without informing the media mouthpieces.
