John Stones transfer saga

All through this business Roberto has continued to play Stones, and all he needs to do now is reject the transfer request and continue to play him. In fact, rejecting the transfer request is surely making it more likely he will stay.

PR has been appalling all the way through the transfer window, we have been linked to player after player, if we weren't in for a player being touted by the press why didn't the club just release a statement saying we are not interested.
The club can now sort all that out, simply release a statement telling everyone what is happening. If he is to be sold announce a price, if he is not going to be sold just say now and clear the air.

I think martinez has answered questions on transfers when asked. We cant make statements every time we are linked with a player.

If Everton reject the request by Stones and stand firm...

Would will still play him ? If so, would Evertonians hold a grudge and boo him ? or would/could we somehow change his mind by supporting him and showing him he belongs here; that Everton is the place for him to be at ?

He won't change his mind but he will do a job and gives us time to get a replacement in.

The way that we normally handle things is to force the player to hand in a transfer request to make them the bad guy in the eyes of the fans and Everton the innocent victims, even if they're just as keen for the deal to go ahead. Perhaps the imminent arrival of Mori has been the trigger?

There was a noticeable softening in our stance over the weekend with both Martinez and Woods telling the media that Chelsea had left it to late in the window to make their move because we wouldn't be able to find a replacement in time. Previously we had said that the player wasn't for sale.

You can't blame the player for wanting to play Champions League football and to compete for the highest honours in the game. Even Gerrard was sorely tempted when Chelsea came calling and Stones doesn't have the same loyalty to us. Barnsley didn't cry when he left his home-town club to further his career in the Premier League.

I'm sure that we're not contemplating selling because we need the money. Our debt wasn't that large compared to clubs like United and Liverpool and the league is awash with cash because of the recent tv deals. The reality is that £35-40m for a young centre back is too good to turn down. I had said in a previous post that we're at a similar stage to Arsenal before they signed Ozil (£42.5m) and Sanchez (£35m). If the departure of Stones can fund a world-class talent to play in behind Lukaku it has to make sense.

Browning and Galloway arguably could step up to play the role ear-marked for Stones. We still need a senior pro in the meantime though, especially while Mori adapts. Lescott is leaving West Brom for a nominal sum and could offer us short-term cover.

What would we have done if Browning's sliding tackle in the City game that ended up taking Stones out had left the young defender with a serious injury? Would we feel more sick selling him for his maximum worth or his value plummeting due to injury or loss of form? Could we forgive him handing in a transfer request? If he hold on to him this time will Chelsea keep knocking every window, unsettling the player and the club?

I would imagine that we have players lined up and we're trying to give ourselves a clear week before the window closing to get the deals over the line. I'd be disappointed to see Stones leave but, if it means that we can afford a player of the calibre of Ozil or Sanchez, on balance I would be happy.
Ozil or Sanchez? You think players of that quality are coming to Everton?

One more thing. We don't sell Stones now and play hard ball then I don't see Mourinho coming back for him until next summer. Chelsea need CBs one way or the other. They may look elsewhere in January as its a more expensive market at that time. This could mean Everton auctioning Stones next summer. Sell it to anyone but Chelsea I hope. Hope Mourinho is sacked on 3rd September.

I'm a bit disappointed in him tbh. I understand him wanting to 'further himself' with a club that's competing for the title & Europe every year, and he doesn't owe us anything per se... but why now? What's his rush like?
Maybe all this guff we keep hearing from the club about how the players love it at Everton is not true.
They'd all love to get away if a better offer came in. Last year was a disaster. Eto'o situation, Distin, Penaltygate, the worst we've seen the team play for years. So many players out of form. Why wouldn't he try to get out?

Hope so. We have to stand firm. We have to stop players telling us what to do. To many transfer requests latelty.

After some time to think about it, I have to say if we sell him for 40 million and get good replacements in, we probably will end up with a better squad. Yarmolenko, Van Dijk, Funes Mori and one more attacking player. Also get rid of a player who apparently doesn't want to be here. Hard to argue that it wouldn't benefit the team.

The problem I have is that first, I have zero trust in the board to bring in those players. Second, we will once again have a negative net spend, or a marginally positive one even if we buy all those replacements. But because it might be good business people will forget about it and the TV money disappears somewhere as usual. Also, this all makes us look very weak. There is no doubt Lukaku will want away next year.

Never boo a blue.
