John Stones transfer saga

PR has been appalling all the way through the transfer window, we have been linked to player after player, if we weren't in for a player being touted by the press why didn't the club just release a statement saying we are not interested.
The club can now sort all that out, simply release a statement telling everyone what is happening. If he is to be sold announce a price, if he is not going to be sold just say now and clear the air.

Mcnulty has said he expects EFC to reject it.

It doesnt make sense to let him go. With the euro's next summer he will want to play and his transfer fee isnt going to drop. It also gives us a season to identify a replacement. If we need one as i think galloway will be ready next season.

“It's always the same question and always the same answer.”

It was only at lunchtime on Tuesday, just before the Everton players arrived at Finch Farm for training, that Roberto Martinez was at pains to reinforce the club’s stance.

The message remained clear: he is not for sale.

Soon after Martinez had spoken, John Stones handed in a transfer request.

And so now, after the young defender has had a change of heart and decided to force through a move to Chelsea, Everton’s resolve will truly be tested.

Martinez, in public and private, has been adamant about Stones’ future, and said last week that the submission of a transfer request would not change that.

Let’s hope that Everton are as good as their word.

Two fingers to Chelsea
Forget tying James McCarthy up to a new deal, bringing the Catalan Kid Gerard Deulofeu back or landing any other signings this summer, telling Stones is he going nowhere would be the best bit of business Everton will do.

It would be a statement.

It would be two fingers to Chelsea who have behaved with arrogance this summer, believing Everton would roll out the red carpet and be thankful for their interest.

It would also be a sign to the supporters that Everton are determined to build a team with Stones right at the heart of it.

But the Blues have to stand firm, resist the wishes of Stones and stand by Martinez, who has fronted their defiance from day one.

You can fully understand why Stones, a future England captain, has been attracted by Chelsea’s interest and would want to go to the Premier League champions.

He wouldn’t be human if he wasn’t.

But what is best for his career, right now, is to stay at Everton. With the European Championships coming up next summer, Stones needs to be playing regularly, Premier League football every week. That’s what he will get at Everton.

It’s near enough guaranteed but at Chelsea, despite what they may be telling him, that is far less certain.

Would Mourinho be as forgiving as Martinez?
Stones is emerging into a wonderful defender, a classy, cultured centre-half in the modern mould.

After being brought to Everton by David Moyes, it has been under Martinez that the 21-year-old has flourished and become the most in-demand defender in the country.

But after less than 50 appearances in the Premier League, Stones is still learning the game. As he did last season, Stones will still make mistakes. Martinez will continue to encourage his risky style of play and accept that mistakes are part of his development.

Will Mourinho be so forgiving? Would he think twice about dropping Stones? This, after all, is a man who substituted his captain at half time in a recent game.

That is not an environment he needs to be going into at this stage of his career.

He obviously feels differently. Not that he’s shown anything less than full commitment to Everton since this sorry saga began.

But now, all that matters, is how Everton feel.

They have been absolutely certain about Stones all summer. If they remain this way - and we hope they do - then Stones stays put.

It is disappointing that Stones has felt the need to hand in a transfer request but both he and the Blues can move on from this.

The question hasn’t changed but the situation has. The answer must remain the same.

Crap article all being said and done as they are saying keeping Stones would be the best bit of business we could do this summer. Nice deflection from actually getting in the so called 3 players we need.

If Everton reject the request by Stones and stand firm...

Would will still play him ? If so, would Evertonians hold a grudge and boo him ? or would/could we somehow change his mind by supporting him and showing him he belongs here; that Everton is the place for him to be at ?

The way that we normally handle things is to force the player to hand in a transfer request to make them the bad guy in the eyes of the fans and Everton the innocent victims, even if they're just as keen for the deal to go ahead. Perhaps the imminent arrival of Mori has been the trigger?

There was a noticeable softening in our stance over the weekend with both Martinez and Woods telling the media that Chelsea had left it to late in the window to make their move because we wouldn't be able to find a replacement in time. Previously we had said that the player wasn't for sale.

You can't blame the player for wanting to play Champions League football and to compete for the highest honours in the game. Even Gerrard was sorely tempted when Chelsea came calling and Stones doesn't have the same loyalty to us. Barnsley didn't cry when he left his home-town club to further his career in the Premier League.

I'm sure that we're not contemplating selling because we need the money. Our debt wasn't that large compared to clubs like United and Liverpool and the league is awash with cash because of the recent tv deals. The reality is that £35-40m for a young centre back is too good to turn down. I had said in a previous post that we're at a similar stage to Arsenal before they signed Ozil (£42.5m) and Sanchez (£35m). If the departure of Stones can fund a world-class talent to play in behind Lukaku it has to make sense.

Browning and Galloway arguably could step up to play the role ear-marked for Stones. We still need a senior pro in the meantime though, especially while Mori adapts. Lescott is leaving West Brom for a nominal sum and could offer us short-term cover.

What would we have done if Browning's sliding tackle in the City game that ended up taking Stones out had left the young defender with a serious injury? Would we feel more sick selling him for his maximum worth or his value plummeting due to injury or loss of form? Could we forgive him handing in a transfer request? If he hold on to him this time will Chelsea keep knocking every window, unsettling the player and the club?

I would imagine that we have players lined up and we're trying to give ourselves a clear week before the window closing to get the deals over the line. I'd be disappointed to see Stones leave but, if it means that we can afford a player of the calibre of Ozil or Sanchez, on balance I would be happy.

Everton submit €5 for fazio of Spurs according to the daily fail

If they were to release a statement on every player linked it would be a full time job. Get real.

The club wont announce anything as they got stung on the Leroy Fer deal.
