Tim Howard

Agreed and lets add Southall as well, I remember Kendall making similar comments about him as Cloughie did about Shilton.

Was just coming in to add him into it :)

We're not by any means a title winning team, it's just a good way to highlight how important a goalkeeper is.

That's a whole lot of excuses and poor comparisons for me I'm sorry to say. I'm not worried what other goalkeeper's percentages are, I'm worried about what OUR goalkeeper is doing.

We'll just agree to disagree there I think.
Was just responding to the question in terms of save %. If he's going to be judged negatively based on that stat, we should also look at the inverse.

Main point is that he should have saved the Kolorov goal, no quesiton. Outside of that, he's had a fine season. Every keeper mentioned has made mistakes so far this season as well. Hart hasn't conceded but he's had eff all to do. Didn't really look assured on those corners did he?

Give the guy a chance this season is all I'm saying. He's made one real mistake in 3 games and has done plenty of good the past couple games. The defense deserves more flak for yesterday than what they're getting.

It's essential if you want to become a top team and I find it bizarre that Martinez doesn't seem to see it that way.

Been giving him a chance for how many years now, he has good spells but the bad ones far outweigh those. If this was a one off there wouldn't be as much flak mate.

It's time to go shopping. But we won't.

not being nasty here or racist or whatever i'm being, but does anyone from outside of the USA actually defend him?
I have no idea how this could be construed as racist. I have said he should be replaced if possible. He's had a fine season apart from one mistake, yet people expect perfection out of him and no one else. People saying his best save was made with his face? Yeah because he positioned himself well, stood his ground, and gave Navas nothing to shoot at. He's done fine this season. If he cocks up regularly like the first half of last season, I'll be on the bandwagon to replace him again, despite Joel being absolute pants. The man gets no credit for doing anything well, yet gets all the blame no matter what. Anyways, I'm done with this thread until next week. Everyone can have their own opinions. Just sharing mine.

You mean the 5th choice LB, 21 year old kid who is a naturally right sided player that let Nasri through? You're right, let's slate him more than the 36 year old goalkeeper with hundreds of caps for making basic errors.

Is fair, but Stones has been responsible for just as many goals as Howard this season mate. Just something to think about. Now I'm done with this until next week for real. Cheers.

*We agree, we need an upgrade. Just think people should be fair with their assesment of players, and Howard, Osman, etc get singled out incorrectly sometimes.

Stones is a 21 year old center back with a world of potential.

Howard is what he is - not good enough.

i was going to post he was having a good game yesterday, but then he turned the game around by being beaten by the same kind of shot he's been beaten by all his career.

He was only mentioning the stats because the other poster had used the stats to criticize Howard! I see it all the time on here.

"Howard is crap, look at these stats." "Actually, the stats show something else." "The stats don't matter, he's crap!"

He made two yesterday.

Near post, then closing his eyes and dropping his hands only to be chipped.

They should have scored either way, but those two goals were both goalkeeping errors. His saves were not spectacular. Let's not pretend like Howard is performing at an acceptable level for a team with ambitions of Europe. He has not done so since returning from Brazil.

You can not seriously believe the 2nd goal was Howard's fault. Yaya's pass and Nasri's run were poorly defended, and it takes an immense amount of skill to chip the keeper from there and still keep the ball down low enough. Howard's hands were exactly where they should be to close down Nasri's angles, he'd already made another very similar stop against Navas earlier.

This has to be a similar effect to the criticism that Naismith / Osman get. I can post gifs of them making good plays that are mysteriously forgotten, stats to show that the criticism is unfounded, but people latch on to those and whitewash over every error that Barkley/Stones make in their memories.

I know Howard isn't a great keeper, personally I can think of at least 3 other Americans who should start ahead of him for the national team, and if you think this is all based on my nationality, feel free to dig up my posts about Landon Donovan on here. I just think people should be sensible with their criticism of him, and not claim that literally every goal we concede is his fault.

Over the last year or two on GOT, things have gotten so hyperbolic. Everyone is either gash or flawless, no one is willing to look at players in nuanced, balanced terms.
