John Stones transfer saga

so all the papers are putting up new stories saying we have today rejected £30 million, has this actually been confirmed anywhere ?

I don't understand why Chelsea didn't just come in from the off with a big bid instead of messing about with silly ones, makes you wonder how committed they are to getting Stones? Maybe they know its not happening but are making it look good, like we did a few times in the past with nonsense bids for players we cant get to look good to the fans?
Maybe they thought we needed the money to sign players so thought we would take a lower bid. Seems strange to have waited so long to up it though seeing as they need to sign players.

I disagree.

As cack as he may well bem the David Luiz fee would have been inflated due to the fact that he's a 'marquee' player - Stones may be a wonderful, wonderful prospect he just doesn't have the marketing gravitas currently.

I think £40m is a mad bid. The issue will always be how that money is used in such a short time by a manager with an interesting track record in buying defenders (Gary Caldwell?).

That said I agree 100% that we don't need to sell and that I can't see Stones rocking the boat. I hope.

To be honest I think if Stones went for a massive fee to the champions, then undoubtedly became an England regular and eventual captain (playing for a London club would aid that...) he'd be very marketable. John Terry but handsome and not a bigot? Very, very marketable I think. Chelsea have millions of plastic fans all around the world ready to buy into "John Terry Jr".

said it the other day the subbing of Terry made a huge impact at Chelsea towards them replacing him.

despite everything I have a gut feeling he is going. my other gut feeling is our transfer policy is based on this transfer. talks of yarmalenko strikes me that the money has to come from somewhere.

hope I'm wrong

£50mil at least to even consider it. And at this stage we shouldn't even entertain selling him. We'll be able to demand £50mil as a starting price this time next year, IMO. We have no need to sell, we have funds to bring players in (it's pretty clear that we're just waiting until late on to try and get some cheaper deals - hopefully this doesn't back-fire), and Stones is happy to stay. Tell Chelski to do one and keep hold of one of the top three English talents (baring in mind we also have another one of those in Barkley).

Yep. He's not going to get that reach at plucky little Everton though :(

Neville and Carragher made some brilliant points about that on MNF. Said that wasn't to the board - Mourinho knows that signing Stones isn't gonna win them the title, he's just doing it to cement himself as being there for a 'project' by buying young players. No, Mourinho was sending a message to Terry. He's been tosh in pre-season, and there's obviously something wrong in that dressing room.

Chelsea's dishevelled defence on Sunday has certainly raised the ante. And, as other posters have referenced, the narrative has swift changed from 'Stones can learn from Terry' to 'HELP!...Chelsea needs a new back line'.
In a rational world, I cannot perceive Everton selling Stones at such late date and post such emphatic 'not for sale' utterances.. But the footballing world is anything but rational nowadays....there is an amount that will prise Stones from Everton...

Honstly dont get the whole modest increments of the bid. They KNOW that they have to pay through the teeth. After the last bid they should have upped it to 35mil. At least THAT would have gotten a certain chairman's attention. 30mil STILL doesnt beat what Ferdinand went for almost 15 years ago!

Theyll go to 40m i reckon or 35 with a lot of add ons

Spot on that.

We have been in this position before plenty of times with Moyes " Bloody get is dithering over transfers " people used to say.

If only he had been backed a little, not a lot and we might have pushed on to a champions league place.

Think Martinez will eventually get tempted so he is able to wheel and deal and bring in new players. Just a shame we have to sell our prized jewel.
I think we have the Sky money now its not just the fee on a player you look at with us it the wages we do not pay silly wages like the richest six - Stone will stay for now if we crack on with the form v Southampton we should be attracting players to the club not selling our prize assets!
