John Stones transfer saga

I love this, from that ShedEnd...

"I'll say it again, for a club to make a 3rd bid, after the opposition manager has said a handful of times the player isnt for sale, indicates that either Martinez is playing the media/fans and telling them what they want to hear, or there is encouragement coming from Stones and/or his camp"

So it could not be in any way that Chelsea are playing a silly game, or THEY are trying to appeas their fans...by looking to "try" for good players.

This is not about the value of John Stones now or in 12 months. It is all about the ambition of the Everton Board and the message that selling John Stones sends to an excellent bunch of young players that we have emerging at the club right now - lukaku, barkley, browning, galloway, ledson, dowell - to go down through the age groups. What selling John Stones says is that lads your agents might as well start planning your next move away from Everton cos the Board has shown such a lack of ambition that they'll sell the likes of a future leader as good as Labone or Ratcliffe way before he's matured for Everton or had a chance to become that leader.

100% spot on. I take my hat off to you.

I'm not wearing a hat, but if I was, I would.

What does even £40m get us?

Spend £15m or so to get a proven Prem CB (who won't have as many years ahead of him) then maybe get 2 players for other positions who may or may not work out. We could end up stronger, but given the inflated values in the Prem that money either goes nowhere or it's spent on players from other leagues who present a risk.

We should have some money to spend as we're in the Prem. Every team is spending. We don't need to spend a fortune, we just need one more quality, playmaker type. Then another CB and possibly another striker (who could come on loan). If we have to sell Stones to do that then the board have sunk to new depths.

I don't think there is any chance of him going. He will likely have another season like last, getting better with his value is soaring.

We are going to see bids of 60m in 18 months time and everyone knows it.

Very well put.

...entitlement begets delusion, as certain as hubris begets nemesis.

there isnt one centre back we could buy who would be as good as stones is right now

You can tell why he wants him so bad he's got some better stats than Terry.

Perhaps the fan activism has helped. Any temptation Bill may have felt to sell Stones could have been tempered with the knowledge he would fuel an absolute inferno if he did it now.

I'm not even bothered if he asks to go now. It's too late, and he should have already been told he's staying this season regardless. He's a sensible lad, I think he'd get on with things.

I'm sure there is. Perhaps not one as classy or good on the ball, but there are other good CBs.

At the end of the day though, we should not need to sell, and Stones is not the type to kick up a stink.

So for me it'd have to be a mad bid. Is £30-40m mad? I don't think so. It's definitely a lot, but what I call mad is the £49m for Sterling or the £50m for David Luiz. And bear in mind Sterling kicked up a stink, and Chelsea weren't arsed about losing Luiz. Put a £50-60m price tag on his head, and then tell them to go pay it or stop bidding.
