Beer, revisited

Had a decent pint of Samuel Smith's cask bitter last night - £1.80 a pint! Alehouse in Levenshulme, bit rough and ready but well run.

Can't swing a cat without hitting a real ale shop round where I live now. CAMRA may as well disband - they've won. A lot of one-dimensional, excessively-hopped ale on offer. Needs to evolve a bit IMHO, more to brewing than hopping the pants off things.

To a point yes. The coverage of cask ales, craft beers and 'real ale' has definitely increased across many regions, but there's still 'black spots'.

For example, in South Liverpool and City Centre there are substantial number of pubs which sell good ale. North Liverpool it's much more sparse.

Yet, when you reach Waterloo, Crosby and beyond it becomes more regular again. Still a long way to go...

There are some great Samuel Smith pubs, i went to one recently where they brew on site.

It's true that a lot of places offer a cask ale when they really shouldn't. Looking after ale's not everyone's game.

They're a funny lot Samuel Smith's, we've got one in Bristol that sounds similar, pubs a bit ropey but the beers are excellent, well kept and cheap as hell.

And I agree, this obsession with hop heavy beers covers a multitude of sins. A lot of breweries (especially newer 'craft' ones) are over hopping to disguise pretty dull beer I reckon. Some brewers I know say its to try and get lager drinkers into ale. Maybe.

Well that's another factor entirely. Down our way (South Liverpool) there's lots of pubs who look after their real ale well.

There's also a lot who arguably don't, but there's more than enough options out there to ensure you can get a good pint in most areas.

Other places across the city it's a little bit more barren. You might find a hand pump, yet you clearly wouldn't touch it with a bloody barge pole.

Good ale is fantastic, yet there often isn't a competent middle ground: it's either good to reasonable pint or straight to a bad pint.

Even a marginally bad pint will potentially give you the wildies - meaning it's often not worth the risk if you're unsure about the pub.

I have heard about it, but have not confirmed it's existence with my presence. Good chunk of them are local with rest US and international beers

FYI - I don't think @RaleighBlue is in Raleigh any more...although I can't remember where he was moving.
True.

I am now in Washington state - Seattle area. The Raleigh beer garden was opened by Cliffy B, ex design lead for Epic Games, currently head of Boss Key. I know a bunch of people that work for him from my time down there.
