Rio Ferdinand was sold for £30m as a 23 year old 13 years ago.

THIRTEEN YEARS

John Stones is absolutely in Ferdinand's league. If Ferdinand could fetch £30m over a decade ago, with the huge increase in TV money over the last decade, we should be quoting an eye-watering fee. Stones has 4 years left on his deal, no release clause and (as far as we know at the moment) isn't agitating for a move.

I've only seen two world class talents at Goodison in my living memory. Rooney and Stones. We let Rooney go for less than we should have demanded because of his contract situation and the fact he forced a move. At the moment, we don't have those issues with Stones so we should simply demand a crazy amount of money for him.

Firstly, Im 99% certain that isn't true. Secondly it isn't terribly relevant.

of course it's relevant.... he achieved not much last season apart from establishing that he's better than Distin. how much would have you valued him at last summer? 10mill would have bought him easy I recon and he certainly did not enough to add another 40ontop of that. I'm not here to change your opinion I'm just giving mine.

I know, I know.

HE'S PRICELESS
WE'RE NOT GOING TO SELL HIM
WE'VE GOT A JOHN STONES TRANSFER THREAD
and so on...

But there's a lot of talk at the minute concerning his value and so, I thought it would be interesting quantify opinion with a poll.

Transfers are part of the game, and every footballer has a price. What price would you consider 'acceptable' to sell John Stones?

Maybe I have blue-tinted glasses, but if Raheem goes for £49M, that's the floor for Stones

I've used the word "recently" for a reason. Rooney was what? 11 years ago?

We'll see anyway. The short of it is that you are (somewhat rightfully) fearful and you're letting that fear cloud facts.

I know we can't keep any player for ever, and I can't see how we could ever convince any player to stay with us long term as we are in no way going to be able to match the ambitions of top players. But we CANNOT sell Stones this summer. I don't see how we would get the best value for him. Keep him another 12 months or so and his value goes up by £10 million at least

massively overpricing him. go back 1 year and for most he wouldn't have even been first choice for us, the Kid looks a player alright but he's still learning his trade and has achieved nothing of note so far apart from England caps and we all know how crap they are. to compare him with Maldini Beckenbaur and the likes is just laughable really at this point. Anything north of 30 mill will see him gone. It would be nice to keep him of course but Money talks and I'm sure the kid will want to leave us for a chance at winning something soon enough even if it's not this summer.
Amen.

Distribution side of his game is superb, granted. He also has the happy knack of being 'there' when the ball pops out loose in and around the box to secure the ball.

But defenders first and foremost have to be able to defend. He's ok, but his positioning when we're stretched isn't all that and he loses opponents he's supposed to be marking in the box. He's gotten away with that criticism because of the offensive side of his game and the fact that he's young so Jagielka will always (especially as the captain) get the lions share of criticism. There'd be no hiding place from that criticism at Chelsea. If they get him he'd be dosed into that side over the next 18 months,

I think we'd be lucky to get it over £30M, tbh. Obviously if those brewstered mugs want to throw nearer £40M at it they're quite welcome to do so.

As I take Gif responses to be the modern equivalent of Godwin's Law, I will accept your defeat and carry on about my day.
Your graciousness in victory brings me comfort.

I shall accept that the sale of John Stones is the best thing for the club provided that Chelsea meet the board's valuation.

I also concede that we shall no doubt be in a stronger position both on the pitch and financially for the coming season as a result of this transfer.

I look forward to helping out Barnsley with the mooted 20% sell on fee and am excited by the prospect of watching Stones develop into a world class centre back for Chelsea and England.

Solidifying our position as perennial Europa League contenders will surely be guaranteed and we can rejoice in the likelihood that the status quo will continue for a number of seasons yet to come.
