He's building a young team which is boss, but i think Mertens can slot in straight away and be a provider for Rom. Shaqiri strikes me as being more selfish and with him Barkley and Del behind him rom might end up very frustrated sometimes.

Somehow I believe Rom wont care as much if we are winning... especially if those other 3 players slot in 20+ goals. The pressure for Lukaku to be THE guy will be less meaning he can "enjoy his football and express himself" ...to quote a man in brown shoes.

You know that experienced players can be quality too right?

I am sure...but i cant recall anyone recently in an Everton kit having a legitimate season during the twilight of their career.

Maybe years ago a players swan song could last a little longer but with modern football...i think young players like Shakiri just offer more than a veteran. (for clarity i consider 29+ on the back of the career)

Gareth Barry was class when we had him on loan, he was either 32/33 then. Distin was also very good up until last year and he's about 50.

Distin for about 4 seasons .

didnt know 28 was the twilight of someones career

Mertens or Shaqiri?
Great question.

If both are available why can't we take both.

Wing options of Mirallas, Deulofeu and Mertens would be ace.
ACM options of Barkley, Shaqiri and Cleverly.

If there's a major injury crisis all our wingers can play in the middle and Shaqiri or even Cleverly can play out wide.

Sell McGeady and Naismith and job done.

Mertens is probably better if we're trying to find someone to play LW for this season.

Most players are considered at their peak at 28.
exactly so its not a sheer drop off a cliff either. think Mertens being 28 and more experienced is more what we need right now. we already have two highly rated 21 year olds in Ross and Del, don't think adding another talented but unfinished attacker is what we need

I will concede Distin. I had already thought him the exception to my point. Barry...hmm. One above average season 2 years ago at age 32, not sure if I would agree that is quality. He did boss some games but in others a liability. Look at the fume this forum has over Howard... another example

Dont get me wrong a team needs experience, it does, but if i were a coach i would focus on youth over experience. Occasionally you will get a father time player but unless his name is Pirlo do you truly want him taking minutes better spent on adding experience of the youth?
