there aren't many Pienaar's about though mate, not in our price range, perhaps changes in other parts of the team or tactics would be the way to go, most fans just want to see him at least try to adapt to it

I don't really believe we could sign an eriksen, he was a sought after wonder kid, how many wingers have pienaar's workrate, discipline and selfless link up play? he's a rarity for a winger, sigurdson is a good shout and Tadic, but I would still say we have to address the issue elsewhere on the pitch if we are to persist with this style of play, either a deep lying ball player or a natural number 10, preferably both

I've been a supporter of Martinez as you know, and backed him in the middle of the season when others thought we would get relegated, something which was never going to happen.

However the doubts are there Dave, that was more than a just a poor end of season performance from the players, really it was.

We've got one a good squad of players, yesterday Baines aside it was pretty much our top team, yet we had no shape, no tactics, no passion and there was no change from the sideline.

The plotters have been saying this for a while, for the first time I saw evidence of it myself.

The evidence was that the players had given up for the Summer. As professionals they should be ashamed. Stones, Galloway and Besic aside I was disgusted with the whole lot. That yesterday, and for much of the malaise hasn't been just a managerial issue....it's a player issue. Martinez isn't exempt from criticism and in some ways I understand the reason for these never ending polls, however, I'd like to see some on the players as it's them who ultimately make the difference on the pitch week in week out. The great hope that is Ross Barkley has been truly poor, and Mirallas has turned up only when he could be arsed. Lukaku looked lazy as he'll mid-season and several had World Cup hangovers. It's fine to say the manager has to sort them out, and he does, but they have to take responsibility for their own (in)actions.

He should see out his contract - the powers that be felt it was right to give him a contract and it should be honoured. If he goes early then so should the people that chose him plus the senior players who've badly let everyone down. Players are so protected - their agents whine endlessly, they take zero blame for bad performances and hide behind the manager who gets the stick, and then have the temerity to say they're leaving for 'a bigger Club' or for 'Champions league' football.

I voted in till xmas because what I wanted wasn't there.

I'd give him pre season and the 1st few weeks of the season. Any signs like nothing has changed from last season then he goes before the transfer window shuts and we get someone else in. We do all our buying late anyway so can't see that we would have spent much.

This season has been littered with performances like that.

Yesterday was no more or less passionless than the games against Swansea, Hull, Stoke, Burnley and my own particular nadir, Baggies.....all of which very definitely would have fitted your criteria as "important" games.

I hope.

I would give him the first part of next season. If we don't see changes over the summer/in that time period, I would look else where.

I don't think people can really defend him, but then again it's each to their own.

I'm of the opinion that it won't take much to turn things around. A decent transfer window and pre-season and I think things will look a lot different. But if they don't by Christmas, they probably never will again under Martinez, and that's when you have to start thinking about long term damage.

But I don't think it will come to that.

I posted on here how despite the result I enjoyed the Sunderland game because of the relentless attacking we did.

The FA Cup will see them utterly embarrassed more than likely. Lambert was a dour Scot ( there seems to be lots of them) and Sherwood is a gobby egotist in the mould of Brenda across the park.
When you change the manager you have to change a decent proportion of the players if you really want to progress.

When Sherwood was appointed I said he would be good for them but they would also suffer a few humpings. Even allowing for yesterday I still think the Villa fans are happy with him.

He doesn't deserve it that's why.

The conceit that we sack a manager because we fall out of the top half of the table. Unreal.

We are not a club that earns the right to hire and fire because we dont back managers.

I'd say the right tone to strike is that we know he can provide excellent football and 21 wins in a season. So lets see how far back to that standard he gets next season.

Or we could go and get that Klopp or Capello in, because they'll defo do a brilliant job with a net spend of £17M over two seasons.

Totally agree mate. When you consider the other options we could have instead of Martinez it's a bloody worry!

End of next season. We he gets it right he's a brilliant tactician, as away at wolfsburg and home against United showed. The problem I think we have is that we are a Confidence team - once we score you see players visibly getting better. When we scored away at Swansea it was like flicking g a switch. We'very not had someone who will take a match by the scruff - maybe Mccarthy. I thought ross and rom would but they seem introverted. In 13/14 each win saw us looking better and better

I have faith with a good start and 1-2 signings we will be ok - we need to make our team more than the sum of its parts again . I just hope stones stays fit.
