Or even watch Everton circa 1975 when we gave a first team chance to a lad called Cliff Marshall round about the same time Arsenal were playing their first African American player in Brendan Batson.

Hornby isn't a liar, he just didn't research his book properly and didn't care to correct future versions of it once it was made clear that he'd made a mistake
It's not like Everton were angels during the horrific racism of the 70's and 80's, but to single us out specially is unfair. Most clubs were guilty of it
He even tries to excuse Liverpool fans throwing banannas at John Barnes by saying they were doing it ironically or some such
He overly romanticises Liverpool in general and I suppose that makes it easier for him to believe the "accepted truth"
No one ever really defends Everton outside of the fanbase though, which is why the Daily Mirror continues to get away with it's constant Everton bashing

The initial mistake in not researching the matter is one thing and bad enough in its own right......but to persist with an uncorrected account in later editions even when his mistake had been made clear is to propagate a fiction and perpetuate a porkie.

he the betting tipster so not a reporter at all and always tries to be as funny as he can, with varying success. I think hes a Liverpool fan so no wonder he is less than complementary about Everton. I actually think hes quite witty

Lets face it he is a tit, like one of those fellas that thinks he is really funny and looks around every time he opens his grid for a laugh but gets on your nerves after a minute or two and you want to punch just to take he smug smile of his face, bit like john bishop
Ah, I like him tbh. My dad buys the Mirror and I used to read his column all the time. He gets a few good ones in here and there.
