I quite enjoy the realism here

9 in 33 vs. 7 in 37.

Jelavic is regarded as having the worst season imaginable with those figures, so I can't say Lukaku has a "very good scoring record" this season, as he hasn't.

Europa League Lukaku, however... that guy is an animal. Amazing what happens when teams try to play football against us and Lukaku spanks them because of it.

Part of the problem with you Tubey, is that Europa League Rom is still Rom. You can't just choose to ignore the fact that he was ace in the EL every time you bring up scoring stats.

He's been crap in the league, great in other competitions, so overall decent. I agree with you that something needs to change in the league. He needs more support and we need to play to his strengths. But Jelavic wouldn't have bagged 19 in all comps, and he certainly wouldn't have done that aged 21. Such hyperbole does no one any favours.

They're two unrelated competitions for me. It's not hyperbole to say Lukaku is stunning in Europe, pretty awful in the league - you've just said the same thing yourself - the difference is I place more emphasis on the bread and butter competition and don't see performance in the two competitions as equal.

You're asking for Lukaku to be playing off the shoulder of the last man.

We don't play like that under Martinez and haven't since the turn of 2013.

That is indeed the problem. I fully agree with you that we shouldn't be setting up with two defensive midfielders, but if we didn't we dont' play possession football, as it'd mean the full backs don't get forward high enough to be a cohesive attacking unit with the passing trying to stretch teams for openings. You need the two defensive midfielders to cover the full backs.
Not in the capacity of full-on DM's that we've had - at least one can venture forward successfully, as we've proven thus far this season, albeit the game and passing have to be a lot quicker for it to work.

It's hyperbole to compare him to Jelavic.

And my issue is not that he's great in Europe, poor in the league. It's that you've detached Europe Rom into some other entity, and put him to the side, as if he's another person altogether.

When weighing up a player's performance throughout the campaign, you have to consider all competitions. It was not a different Rom in Europe, it was the same guy, just playing in a different environment. Hopefully we can do our best to get our league play to rival that of our European play, and if we can, I'm sure Rom will be great. Of course he needs to improve too, but then he's 21, so like almost every player ever at that age, I'm sure he'll improve....

I didn't compare him to Jelavic in any way except league goals this season, which are similar. That's not hyperbole.

You said a good performance in Europe negates a poor one in the league to make him "decent" overall - I don't see it that way; I think the league carries a lot more weight. I don't think they're two different players in the two competitions - I simply think his performance in the Europa League is nowhere near as important as the league. So I think he's had a poor season overall, not a decent one.

Apart from not scoring there wasn't much wrong with the first half yesterday.

I could go off Bobby this summer. The way we play is highly dependent on personnel; yer nan can play kick and rush if you put new tennis balls on her walker but we need something more akin to hip replacement surgery. Interesting times...
I see his time here in a positive light:

- first season ripped it up in terms of points total and quality of play at times.

- second season showed he can get to grips with European opposition (2nd leg v Kiev apart), though at the expense of domestic programme.

- already familiar with the highs and lows of the job in terms of performance and fan reaction, so experience he can draw upon for season three

- all told, he's now a bone fide Everton manager and not a novice anymore. He's seen his players and knows intimately who can do what and who needs to go. If we have a good summer all the above will provide fuel for us.

This feller will come through with flying colours in the end, I'm 100% certain.

Completely dominated 90 minutes yesterday having 25 shots at goal and playing some very nice football; S'land got two scabby deflections and got off with a pen.

That's the way non-Evertoninas saw it, and correctly so.

If we play like that every week and get a cutting edge to it I'd be very content.

I thoroughly enjoyed that game yesterday Dave, despite the defeat.

A good old fashioned cavalry charge throughout the second half.

So did my chums who go the game with me.

I was really surprised to read the negative comments from some of our friends on here when I looked at the Forum later on.

There are some hard to please buggers on here and no mistake :whip:

If you can't laugh at yesterday's game, I fear for your sanity. It's the only reasonable reaction to something like that.

I never felt more like a Cubs fan as well as an Evertonian. It gives you "perspective" on life without anybody having to die or anything like that.

In a couple of weeks, mercifully, the curtain will fall on this ordure-like season. Big changes needed over summer. I can't say I await the new season with bated breath since this current season has sucked a lot of my excitement for football (and Everton) out of me. I am going to not give even a moment of consideration to anything football related for 2-3 months. In that period however, I expect people at Everton Football Club, who get remunerated handsomely to do so, to do nothing but think about football and about getting our team back to a place where I can look forward to getting up, in the dead of night, to watch my team play.

I don't get it, I've not seen a post of yours not mention Naismith in so long. Is this how you normally post?

yesterday showed us all how poor our squad is, we have nobody intelligent in the attacking third

this is everton's tactic....

pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, chip, pass, boot, run after the ball, start again, pass, pass, pass, pass, shoot, block, corner, pass, pass, pass, pass, corner, pass, pass, pass, pass, breakdown.

barkley should spend 9 grand a year at the university of football and learn a thing or two.
