how many of the conservatives on here would agree with @evilwebby 's suggestion that (and I quote) "you're only poor if you lack the aspiration to work hard and improve your situation" ?

Yes, a far more appropriate thing that I should have said is that "you only stay poor if you lack aspiration to work hard and improve your situation."

I actually believe, largely, that how we get on in life broadly reflects how much we put into it, regardless of our starting position.

You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about and should refrain from talking about such matters until such a time you don't speak utter tripe.

Hello Pat.

For what it is worth, a brief explanation.

Politics threads have long been a moot point in mod central. Indeed, the GOT rules actually say a big No to them. But as GOT has "matured" and grown, it has been gratifying to see the contributions and tone in the Election thread retain the humour, and in the main, the respect between posters, hence the call to keep it open for weeks.

Now the election has been decided, we opened this as a post election thread, and at times, feelings on both sides have occasionally, (understandably) got a bit heated, with personal insults and a general lack of the tone of the election thread.

Hence the short lock today. (Matchday is often a busy time for us lot as well)

So it is up to you lot really. (Not you Pat!). A healthy, respectful thread reflects well on GOT, which is you lot really. Not us, we just keep the peace and ban spammers mainly.

You are welcome.

If person A pays more than person B yet gets the same out then why should they pay more?

If you where smoking a cig and someone came up to you and said "give me a cig?". Would you give it to them? By your logic you should because you have more.

That actually happened to me and I said "No" and the guy looked at me puzzled and then said please and I gave it to him. Sometimes it's not the fact you don't want to share. It's the attitude that people think you have to share.
Two things.
1) My innitial comment was with regards to people at the 'top' end not paying their taxes. They are the ones who cost the nation money
2) If the state tells you to pay up, you pay up or face the consequences for not doing so. Not quite the same as someone rudely bumming a cig

It's not just people but a lot of the blue chip companies get out of paying corporation tax. But, lets just pick on the poor eh, they don't have millions in the bank to put up a fight.

I would like to make the observation that the Tories didn't win based on their policies. If they did, then 36% of the nation voted for food banks and poverty. I genuinely don't believe that was the case.

What happened was that people voted out of fear. They were scared by negativity. I understand it. However, this is why I hate the Tory party and UKIP. They win by spreading fear. It is ruining our nation.

Compare this to the VE commemorations yesterday. People faced unimaginable terror without that fear winning.

How things have changed.
