Do you really think they are punished? Why should your children inherit what you worked for. Make them work for it I say. It seems to me that too much being left to the next generation and then the next leads to this....

So, which is it?

Regards the second quote not sure what you mean by your reply. As for the other if you were in that position would you want to leave a nest egg for your children to give them a start in life?

Each person has different views but that is life.

I may well have read it wrong but it seemed to me that in one post you were arguing a case for inheritance and in another against.

No mate, I just think time and again of those B****** who are Lord this or that and the papers lapping it up with pictures of them in night clubs etc in bow ties. Always seems to me they are saying look you poor people, hard cheese.

Why should the government ?

To use it in a manner which prevents the wealth gap widening.

Many parents die at an age when their children are of an age that they should be fending for themselves. I know that I'd rather my folks spent the lot and enjoyed it, rather than worrying about what to leave their kids.

But what if they dont want their own money to do that? Say they would rather it was given to a charity? Or a football club? Or their own kids?

Let people have a choice.

Doesn't justify it, and that also hasn't happened and won't.

The irony of this debate is that inheritance tax is the most easily and legally avoidable tax. Frankly almost anyone with assets significantly above the threshold will be in a position to take advice to reduce or completely negate their liability.

This is just political posturing to create policy differences by the Conservative Party.

Exactly. You have got to be supremely stupid/generous (delete accordingly), or supremely unlucky, (Matthew Harding level unlucky) to pay significant IHT.

Dead easy for the Tories to play this card.

Even if it does get the predictable "reduce tax or their millionaire mates" response.

Kids of wealthy people inheriting loads whilst the kids of poor inheriting very little doesn't contribute to widening the wealth gap? Yeah, ok!

You said it was intended to stop the wealth gap from widening. It will not, as the issue of the wealth gap is that the very very rich are getting even richer. Having over £350,000 in assets does not make you wealthy. The average house price is £272,000. So "Yeah, ok!".
