Everton v Kiev, my view

I think there is a balancing act though mate. Nobody wants to see a return to the late 90's where we pumped balls diagonally 60 yards up to Fergusan.

There also has to be an acknowledgement though, that Lukaku isn't an effective "false 9" who can drop deep and link the play. His strength is either running onto through balls or getting on the end of crosses.

I thought yesterday we got the balance very well. Alcaraz is actually very good at this. Of Knowing when we are tossing a nothing ball forward, and working an opportunity where we can feed the ball into someone in the opposition third.

When we are being pressed high up the pitch by sides we do need to turn them around every so often. I also think speed of breaking is something we can look at. Too often we turn infield and backwards. If we are full of confidence that's fine, but at the moment I wouldn't mind us getting forward and whipping a cross in.

I think last night was a really good balance. for 60 minutes we made a pretty decent European team look very ordinary. If we can add Stones and another commanding centre back to the team, alongside an upgrade on Osman (same type of player) and play to Lukaku's strengths we will be a top team.
I wouldn't be too sure of that, tbh.

Obviously it's a case of mixing up the play. You cant pass through a team all the game. The biggest problem in getting at the opposition is the one you highlight: getting the ball wide and then the brake going on the move as soon as it gets to the final third. Coleman has to be under orders to do that. His instinct is to get his head down and run at the last defender in those situations. I know Roberto likes to get FBs isolated one on one, but I think what that check back inside more likely achieves is the move getting swamped and the impetus is lost.

The thing is, you cant attack like maniacs for 90 minutes. And the build up play isn't 'slow' so much as lateral, which is natural on many occasions when you're trying to work a team and find space between their lines.

There's no gung-ho up and at em football anymore. This is the modern era and screaming for the ball to be worked into the opposition half asap is prehistoric.

Moyes has gone. Let's let his clueless brand of football die with him.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and for reading the post. I wasn't for one moment suggest we play football like we did in the 90's, hopefully in reading my post you'll see that I suggested my understanding of playing to suss a team out and also taking the sting out of the game but we do it for doing its sake. The idea for any team is to make the other team predictable, right? Make their moves as such that you can break them down and attack them. We were the ones who have been predictable and were getting broken down for 30 mins last night (and most of the season). My suggestion is combining the passion, power, pace etc with craft, guile and creativity. I want to see possession football, but positive possession and NOT negative possession (like we have had most of this season).

I appreciate your views and opinions so thanks for your thoughts!

I just dont understand to be honest how some neglect to appreciate that yesterday Kiev came and sat deep like most teams coming to goodison are doing. Where is this space that people think is there but we don't use it? Our first goal came from a counter attack where Barry played the ball into the channel where Lukaku had made a decent run. The second was against tired legs and Osman did was we have so sorely missed with a bit of clever movement.

It's alright people getting infuriated that we aren't slicing through teams, but when there are 11 defensive bodies camped in their own half from the get go, any pass into feet is just crowded out. So what do we do? We go back, we start again. This is going to happen every week because there isn't an Eriksen in there pulling strings.

This summer is a big one, but its like some don't see what opponents are doing and just blame the managers tactics/the players.

Everyone embrace the RM football style which has netted 28 points from 28 games, won 6, drawn 10, lost 12, goals for 33, goals against 41. We need to get with this winning Barca style of football for all our sakes.

Moyes clueless brand of football was generally a lot more skillful and creative than what we've seen this season to be fair.

Thanks for the comment, I love hearing others views and how we all see the same game differently and I agree with what you have said about what happens when teams come to play us. Like Leicester, West Brom (To name 2) but what I would say to counter your point is that in the second half last night we DID slice through Kiev when we moved the ball quickly and with quality, so by stretching the game with width and and making the opposition predictable we can play in a way that allows our best players to thrive. Im not opposed to biding our time and being patient in fact Im more than happy for us to be patient but at times we have to find the gap and drive into the space. Unfortunately space doesn't happen when you allow the other team to camp out. You displace teams and find gaps by moving the ball with pace. Just my opinion though! Thanks for the reply and taking the time to read my post!
