Great post @Andy Dunn
I just dont understand to be honest how some neglect to appreciate that yesterday Kiev came and sat deep like most teams coming to goodison are doing. Where is this space that people think is there but we don't use it?

You have to ask the question, why do teams set up like that against us? They set up more defensively against us than they do against City and Man Utd, on balance.

The reason is because, so long as possession is our number one priority, having 10 men compact sitting behind the ball totally negates our style; we aren't passing with purpose, playing the ball directly, creating quick ways to burst up the pitch, we're simply passing the ball from one player (usually a defender) to the next (usually a defender).

It's frankly shocking that Martinez hasn't addressed this. It is a case of being pragmatic - set up the team to face the opposition in front of you, allow them time on the ball and make use of space in the counter and play more directly when we do have the ball.

When teams realise sitting back isn't effective against us, they won't set up like that anymore.

Couldn't agree more... The perfect response. So if we see it then why does our "gaffer" not see it. I was once told that his preparation is "Second to none" but Im finding myself doubting that at the moment! Thanks for the thoughts.

Best

Spot on

The fact that we looked far more dangerous when we had kiev players facing shoes that the play needs to me mixed up

The thing is, you cant attack like maniacs for 90 minutes. And the build up play isn't 'slow' so much as lateral, which is natural on many occasions when you're trying to work a team and find space between their lines.

There's no gung-ho up and at em football anymore. This is the modern era and screaming for the ball to be worked into the opposition half asap is prehistoric.

Moyes has gone. Let's let his clueless brand of football die with him.

The same brand which dragged a relegation contender to consistently contending for top four despite very little financial support. The same clueless brand of football without which we may not be here conversing about a European spot for the past years. The same clueless brand of football that beat Barcelona? Moyes is gone, and good riddance- but clueless brand of football is a bit too harsh...

*shakes head, starts to give long version, thinks 'kit, 5 mins of my life I'll never get back and might need someday

Thanks for the comment, I love hearing others views and how we all see the same game differently and I agree with what you have said about what happens when teams come to play us. Like Leicester, West Brom (To name 2) but what I would say to counter your point is that in the second half last night we DID slice through Kiev when we moved the ball quickly and with quality, so by stretching the game with width and and making the opposition predictable we can play in a way that allows our best players to thrive. Im not opposed to biding our time and being patient in fact Im more than happy for us to be patient but at times we have to find the gap and drive into the space. Unfortunately space doesn't happen when you allow the other team to camp out. You displace teams and find gaps by moving the ball with pace. Just my opinion though! Thanks for the reply and taking the time to read my post!

But the difference between Kiev and WBA, Leicester etc is that the latter wouldn't have come at us at all. Kiev did, we countered and got a goal. Second half they were tired, giving the ball away and the nearest thing we have to a playmaker won us a penalty with a clever run. Pulis, at 1-0 from a set piece, would have killed the game by retreating his side into their own half.

I think we need to distinguish between the top sides coming to Goodison, either in Europe or in the league and the 14 other teams in the PL who now will just sit deep. I agree with another post about that is our fault in a way but it's only our fault in that we didn't foresee injuries to Pienaar and Osman. He probably thought between the two of them we could get through a season and then the summer after Lukaku we could invest.

Nothing is going to change this season. most of our fixtures are against those around us who will just frustrate us.

Big summer.

DaveK has become that annoying nugget who wouldn't say a bad thing about Kenwright as "he loves the club unlike that orrible sheikh mansour fella who wants that" such a sad day!

I'm all for playing good football but we have been at our most successful hitting with pace on the wings, bombing fullbacks Down the flanks and martinezs football this season isn't and doesn't want to do that.

I'm just thankful im not in the minority as Goodison has become fed up of the man and his giant ego
