But thanks to Man U and Liverpool they had a lot of money!
But we have seen plenty of evidence from spendthrift clubs that merely throwing cash about is not a panacea. Effective scouting of players (not necessarily expensive ones) is also an important component. And again, it is this specific aspect of rebuilding that I believe Everton must engage in.

We are pretty good at that. Besic, Stones, Ross, (kind of), Oviedo, Baines, suggest a decent track record. Others as well I dare say.

RM teams are flaky defensively and that won't change. He had the benefit of taking over a solid Moyes defence, and just added to the attack (which wasn't hard given how dour Moyes is in that department). This season the defence is a year older, slower, and a year farther out from Moyes influence...and the Martinez effect has begun.

Martinez has shown that he can tighten the defence when he has to. We've conceded 5 goals in the last 7 games - including extra time but not penalty competition.

Pretty sure that's John Stones' doing rather than anything Martinez has personally done.
Just my opinion on it anyway.

Well, if Stones takes most of the credit for the improved performance of the defence, then logically Distin should take most of the blame for its previous pervious state.

The defence suffered a lot of changes over Christmas - against Stoke, Howard and Jagielka both went off at half time. Robles came into the team and there were brief appearances by Alcaraz, Garbutt, Oviedo and McCarthy too. Barkley played once as a defensive midfielder. Stones came on for Distin during the West Ham game. After that, the defence took on a steady formation of Robles/Coleman Stones Jagielka Baines/Besic Barry.

So the improved performance came with the return of Stones, the growing confidence of Robles in goal and an unchanged defensive unit.

Correct mate...and such effective (ie not merely profligate) recruitment of players must be further undertaken this summer. Our scouts are thus critically important. They must identify creative personnel for summer recruitment.
