Roberto Martinez discussion

I have not claimed he has control over what happens on the pitch. I questioned if it was believed that the manager bears no responsibility for it.

Seeing as the manager picks the team, selects the squad, directs the coaching and decides how to spend any transfer funds we may have (all of which will influence what happens on the pitch), then he must bear some responsibility for what happens on the pitch.

If the manager doesn't do anything that influences what happens on the pitch, what exactly is his role?

I agree, but Martinez has not suddenly become a managerial idiot. To blame him exclusively (or even majorly) for our downward spiral this season is lazy and unhelpful.

There are clearly a lot of things that we would like to see as fans (for example I would like us to play a more counter attacking style against the big teams), but we have to give Martinez the time to show us that he can turn things around. Unless we start heading for relagation, which despite the melodramatic nonsense from some of the "fans" on here who seem to be enjoying sticking the boot in on our plight a bit too much, we are not, then he should be given the full season and the fans should support him in it.

As fans we have to bear a lot of responsibility for how the players are on the pitch, the fans got what they wished for after the Chelsea game, we no longer play risky passes for fear of conceding, we have been defensively solid over the last month (since Distin has been out of the team go figure). Unfortunately it has become a case of "be careful what you wish for". Martinez can make Barkley etc feel as comfortable as they like when losing the ball in training, but if the fans turn on him as they have done, there is no way in hell is he going to do it in a match.
