Martinez Interview

That interview frightens me.

It is like Hitler ranting on and on at his general as the Russians encircled Stalingrad by telling them to fight on to the last man no mater what because victory is just around the corner.

Martinez is insisting that his ways are right and that the players will "have to play his way....but be better about it".

And he won't "compromise" on his "philosophy".

*shakes head*

It is going to be a long hard winter, lids :(

You love him really.

You've sincerely compared a nice fella and an Everton manager to boot to Hitler. Sit down, shut up and reevaluate your life.

Indeed.

There is nowt I would love more than Bobby leads us to the promised land.

But that interview......sheesh.

In a couple weeks if we have dropped even further Bobby will be like Adolf in his Berlin bunker ranting away like the bloke in Downfall :pint2:

Roberto Martinez refuses to blame Everton's style for downturn in fortunes

EVERTON manager Roberto Martinez has vowed to reverse the club's recent fortunes, but insists his philosophies and playing style are not to blame.

The Toffees have had a woeful Christmas after suffering successive defeats to Stoke, Southampton and Newcastle, with many blaming Martinez's system for the downturn in results.

Possession supremacy and ball retention are important to the Spaniard, but an inability to convert them into goals has become a worrying issue for Evertonians.

Martinez said: "People can have their say in a debate and that is just healthy. The style has nothing to do with winning or losing – it’s how good you are in that style.
"Our philosophy represents Everton. It goes back to the incredible figures that have been special people and custodians of the Club. Our style is what is going to make us successful in the future. Now we need to be good at it.

"It doesn’t matter what style you do, if you are not strong in both boxes you are going to find it difficult to get consistent results.

"At the moment we are in a situation where we have been losing too many games and we need to correct that. There are reasons for it but none of those is the style – it’s how you play that style.

I like that. I like he's not changing course on his outlook when the first test comes in order to pander to the divvies on the telly.

He's absolutely right too: you need to take every scrap of evidence on board to decide whether the way he sees the game being played is the right one, not just the way we've been playing in a slump.

I can understand where he coming from but we have to be concerned about the leaking goals, he also has this problem at Wigan, is this his weakness?

Practice.

Doing the same thing over and over again and getting better at it.

I'd agree with this if the players playing the style we ever likely to get better at it. Howard, Distin, Jagielka, and Barry the last few games simply can't play the style well enough/fast enough. There's no point flogging a dead horse when it comes to that lot.

If we're letting players like John Stones get used to the style then great, no complaints from me, as he will one day master it with practice, or at least get bloody good at it. Distin out, Browning in. Browning will make mistakes but then Distin already makes tons, so why not play the lad who might be here for 10+ and who will benefit from having Martinez's system shoved down his throat?

I see what Roberto is saying, but he needs to at least back up what he's saying by picking players it makes sense to pick.

Well we have played 19 games so Dave that means another 19 to see if his style of football comes to bear fruit.
The evidence is far more than this season's efforts.

He rightly underlines in that interview that his method of playing allows his teams to be able to compete against organisations with greater resources. He's proven that at Swansea and Wigan and last season at Everton. The weight of evidence backs him up big style over the sweep of his career in management.

Anyone not accepting that is not really paying attention or just not prepared to be reasonable.
