Roberto Martinez discussion

Some stats on SSN:

most errors leading to goals (10)

Fewest number of crosses from open play (225)

Conceded fewest number of fouls (178)

Won the most amount of fouls (246)

Caught offside the most (49)

That tells me:

We are too penned in thanks to martinez's system or barkley, naismith and at times eto'o all shoe horned into the side so we have no width to stretch teams.

We are to nice and are getting fouled all over the shop

We are not putting in tackles which is leading to them getting goals.

Not a good sign when you think of the amount of cock ups from wigans defence under him.

I didn't say everything was Distin's fault. If you read some of my other posts I haven't been happy with some of Martinez's decisions lately, for example playing Eto'o in midfield is absolutely shocking, amongst many other things.

The other players are responsible too but the fact is we concede a lot more goals when Distin has played this season. He unsettles with his nerviness on the ball and we still don't know what really happened when he supposedly fell out with Martinez. This could be true yet he's forced to play him through injuries. We need defenders who are completely comfortable playing out from the back and then we won't be so vulnerable when teams press us high up the pitch like they are doing now.

The point is the manager needs at least another two windows to put together a squad that is his, and get rid of all the leftover deadwood.

As for our overall play, the team has zero confidence at the moment. We need a couple of good results from anywhere, even if they're ugly, just to get confidence back.

I just think it's far too early to be calling for the managers head. He has a long term vision for the club and we should give him at least a bit more time to try and implement it. I'd rather that than us get another "safe" dinosaur in.

I'm predicting a much more positive last third of the season anyway. I think we'll do much better in February-May and carry it through to next season.

His long term vision currently looks like a one trick pony at the moment and every one has cottoned onto it.

It's a bit like playing a young kid on FIFA, you learn how they play and spot the weakness in there play and punish them. But they are young so stick with the same style of play as it worked for them at first.

Distin will not be starting soon, you will need to find a new scapegoat.

I'm going to throw a complete rubbish stat into the mix, our defence has been rubbish since Stubbs left the coaching staff.

It's probably not true but the stats back up that crazy statement so it must be.

Incredibly harsh to label Moyes a safe dinosaur considering what he did for the club.

I hope you're right about February to May. All of our players look knackered.

Do you want him sacked?

But he was though mate, and I liked him for the most part of his reign.

I wouldn't consider consistently punching above your weight, challenging for European places and actually breaking into the top four on one of the smallest budgets in the league as being safe.

Has Martinez been safe so far?

Nope, but it would be nice if he had a plan B.

I don't think it's about a 'plan b' which gets bandied about all the time. Like you said before, you need to study a teams weaknesses and set up your own team accordingly. I think that's possibly playing the same style in the whole, but changing things slightly according to what you're up against, that's what the best teams do.

When we have a new manager either soon or in quite a few years we will all be kissing his arse and slagging off Martinez. It's just the way football fans are unfortunately.

That's it really, Mourinho will change his team depending on the opposition. Martinez is like a one trick pony this season, and everyone knows the trick.

Moyes didn't have us 'punching above our weight' though mate. His average finish was 8th, I don't believe that is punching above Everton's weight.

With our budget it certainly was. Stature of club means nothing in the PL today otherwise Man city wouldn't be top 2 every year.

To be fair, Martinez has shown he can do this in the past. Things just aren't clicking this season, but based on the promise he showed last season, he deserves time.

If next season is a repeat of this one then I would say he needs to go, but I really believe things will get better.
