The silence of the sea by Yrsa sigurdsadottir
A cracking locked room mystery, actually a locked boat mystery set in Iceland
Excellent twist and I rarely think twists are very clever or unexpected
This is the exception !
Read it if you get a chance!

If anyone's interested in the Aztecs or the Conquistadores then Aztec by Gary Jennings is a great read. It's an historical novel and I'm not usually a fan, but it really brings to life the Aztec culture.

Anything by Philip k dick, and A Scanner Darkly and Valis in particulaare worth a look, although as with all of Dick' stuff they can become a bit similar and many are just bizarre. His short stories are also worth a look, especially The Defenders, Paycheck and The Skull.

Finally, Evolution by Stephen Baxter.

For laughs I'd go for Wodehouse as others have said and also Tom Sharpe's satires particularly the ones in South Africa: Riotous Assembly and Indecent Exposure.

'Is it just me or is everything [Poor language removed]?" by Lowe and MacArthur is a bathroom library essential.

Is he the guy who conquered dozens of cities but never hurt anyone?

Religious folk don't make for reliable historians. Ripping yarns I'm sure but should be taken with a grain of salt.
