If he can get a prolonged run of games then he's as good as any centre mid we have at the club.

In terms of passing and vision, I fully agree, supporters cite Barry as being ahead of the game in terms of positioning, Gibson has that capacity in terms of reading the play and the runs of where he wants to spread the play.
Having a fully fit midfield is going to be some chore for Martinez as his options and blends will be more difficult to pick and even more enchanting than cask single malts sat in parts of the Scottish Isles.

If only we had the options up front, because lets face it, we all wish the back 5 would never age another day.

Aye, up front, right back and goalkeeper are the positions we don't want injuries in.

Barkley was out for a while around last January too wasn't he?

I get your point on Gibson but before last season he did sporadically miss games, but his lack of appearance is down to not making the first team at United rather than injuries. Who knows? Maybe his luck is gonna turn for the better, rather than be another Norman Whiteside.

I think he got injured and missed one or two games, but by then he'd lost his place for a fair bit i think. Martinez preferred using him off the bench if i recall correctly?

I do hope his luck does turn around but i do think his career will always be one of injuries. I think he was very important to us at a time where we had no midfielders of his ilk and with the passing ability he became very important to the way we play.

I do think because he hasn't actually played in the team were now we have a lot more of those players he does actually become less special and less important to us, but because we haven't had the chance to witness that people always look back more fondly on him because of just how important he was. But he isn't anymore.

If i'm being brutally honest i think if Martinez was to let anyone go from our CM's he'd be the first out the door, as sad as it is i can eventually see him going to a side like Villa (probably someone better than villa) and being very important to them but also being very injury prone once again.

I think he will always be a 40-80 games a club player instead of going on to make hundreds of appearances.

That's just my opinion but i hope i'm wrong! i'm very thankful for what he did but i honestly don't think he's that vital to our squad anymore, we've sort of moved on and evolved. His passing range though is something that will be really useful this season. Can't wait to see him back at goodison if i'm honest.

Fair points but until he got injured he was continually our most important player, in Moyes' last season. Again as you point out we have made significant improvements in that area of the pitch so he could be pushed down the ranking, especially with being injured too, but I'd be wary of rating him so far down that list - he's certainly ahead of Besic and serious competition for the Barry role.

I'm looking forward to seeing him back and the influence on the team he can have again this year, especially with how we play under Martinez - it will suit him more.

Cue him getting sold to Southampton at the last minute of the window now like.

Got to measure age, and got to measure who is played with him. I hope to dear heavens he can recover fully, having fought back previously (similar to Barkley) he'll have the mental toughness to take it a step at a time and let the doctors have their way.
That bunch of very learned people dont stay in jobs if they get it wrong more often than not - if he was a write off, we'd have heard it by now.

Darren has earned another shot, especially as under Martinez he still hasn't had his first yet.

i don't think there is currently anyone in our squad that can pick a pass or thread a through ball as well as Gibson. All the more impressive considering he plays in a deep lying role...

I had serious doubts about his ability when we signed him but he won me over completely and I would be gutted if he moved on without playing a full season under Martinez.

Now lets keep the cheeky Irishman in a cryo chamber between games to save those porcelain knees FFS

Arse have a
You'd think that if Gibson and Barry are both fit, they'll alternate next to McCarthy if Martinez chooses to do some squad rotation?
what exactly is wrong with Gibson medically ? The backend of last Season Bobby said we would see him taking part in the run in, since then zilch .

I see Gibson bieng an absolute beast in Europe, for me the better option than Barry.

Barry is close to a red card in every game, such is the way he plays.
