Prem: Neville on Everton for top four | Setanta
Everton can still come up the rails to disrupt the top four before the end of the season according to captain Phil Neville.
Whilst it was The Toffees’ FA Cup exploits that this weekend hogged the limelight, it is Premier League duties that continue to occupy the thoughts of Neville.
The former Manchester United man, who will come up against his old side in the semi-final, reckons his current employers can capitalise on Aston Villa’s recent blip and Arsenal’s struggles to convert draws into wins in order to take the final Champions League spot.
David Moyes’ men are currently sixth, four points adrift of The Gunners and seven behind Villa but Neville is adamant that the deficit is not irretrievable if they put the weekend cup win against Middlesbrough to the back of their minds and focus on the forthcoming league game with Stoke.
"From enjoying the celebrations on the pitch to getting back to the dressing room - straight away my mind turned to the Stoke City game," he told the club’s official website.
I think success is brilliant at the time but the sooner you move on and concentrate on the next task, the more successful you can get.
"We're all looking forward to the semi-final but there are four or five games before that. All games we should be winning, and if we do win those games then we can be right in the mix for a top four place."
Neville went on to warn of the threat of former Everton striker James Beattie, who has hit the net five times in seven games since his January move from Sheffield United to The Potters.
"I think they've got other strengths as well that we need to nullify,” said Neville.
“Providing a lot of crosses for Beattie has provided a lot of goals in the last month since he signed for Stoke so stopping crosses, second balls, and generally defending like we have been doing, and if we do that, we're going to have an excellent chance of winning the game."
The skipper also admitted he’s been impressed by Potters manager Tony Pulis’ positive approach to his side’s first season of Premier League football.
"They've done really well," continued Neville. "They started the season with loads of energy and enthusiasm. They had a little bit of a dip, but they've managed to keep that enthusiasm.
"He's kept the side going and the principles he started with at the start of the season.
"He knows the more three points he gets, the better the chances of staying in the division, and I think everyone can admire the job he's done there.
"And the pleasing thing is he looks to win every game. It's not as if he sets up his team to defend and get draws, he sets up his team to win and to get the three points.”
