ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

You know, I am not sure if Liverpool won the Premiership this year they could necessarily repeat in the following years.

If they win, it will be because of the freakishly good form of their two strikers, something which the law of averages and the history of the game suggests is not sustainable over the long term.

It is a myth that Rodgers has suddenly become a footballing genius and that Liverpool have a platform for sustained success.

It will be a freak result, based on the unsustainable form of two strikers, the absence of Manchester United, and the inexplicable inability of Chelsea or Man City with their resources to maintain a challenge throughout the season.

We (collectively) are guilty of giving them too much credit.

They wont stand still. They'd spend a lot if they were champions. At the very least they'll have made a massive psychological breakthrough, and at this elite level it counts for a lot. As I said, they 'could' repeat a title win if they did win this season. And we all know the potential for them to stay at or near the top.

In many ways we've lived a charmed existence for a quarter of a century almost as they have underachieved massively. There's no harm in wanting that period extended though. And if they are denied this season they'll find it almost impossible to play in the CL and mount a PL title challenge.

Bottom line: I resent being seen as a Quisling when all that I'm interested in is safeguarding Everton from being steamrollered by a corporate giant next door.

If Arsenal drop points on sunday we can pip them to 4th - remember they will rest players on the last day ahead of the cup final.

Why are they steamrollering us?

Were we not both league and cup winners in the '80's? You're letting your hate for LFC blind you to the fact we've had an enjoyable season, are back in Europe (almost) and are looking up.

As @Coach said above - it's simple.

I want Everton to win. Other teams don't come into it.
It's not that simple. It's a great deal more complicated than that. I was one of those who didn't want us chucking a game when Champions League was on the table still. Mathematically it still is, but it's a real, real long shot now. Winning the game could well hurt us in the long term when all we would gain is an additional three points and guarantee Europa League if it hasn't already been decided by the time we play.

If it was a case of relegating the deluded would you be wiling to throw the match?

I just think you should avoid getting into the idea that losing any match is a good thing, because it's a dangerous habit to get into

I don't want Liverpool to win the title, but I want Everton to be in Europe next year and I honestly think that if we lose this one, we could easily bottle it against Hull on the last day. Scrape a point tomorrow, and then we're in Europe regardless

I don't trust our players in such a clutch situation against a team we "should" be beating

I'd rather Everton be in European competition than not - what bearing it has on LFC is irrelevant.

People, rightly so, feel aggrieved about us being denied European football due to Heysel, but are willing to (potentially) deny ourselves the opportunity because of the reds.

Absolute madness to me, that.

There is literally no chance of this becoming a habit. This is the only time in my life that I have wanted Everton to lose and will probably still be the case when I die.

Besides United or Spurs will drop points tomorrow.

Martinez: "If our neighbour wins the league then that is fantastic for them. If they can win it with our help then that is better than than not with our help".

Imagine Joe Royle or Kendall coming out with bollocks like that?

Blotted copy book Martinez. I just hope the players (especially the local ones) dont take his tripe too seriously.

The players aren't going to throw the game.
Correct, but there's people wishing that.

My question to them, in addition to my post earlier, is how will you feel, having wanted Everton to get beat, seeing Liverpool win the league anyway?

What if you all get your wish, and we do lose, and they won anyway, and we missed Europe? Then what if, after a season where we could've pushed on and haven't (coz of no Europe) they win the league again?

But you do what you what, cheer for Man City if somehow you think that justifies being an Everton supporter.

Me, I'll be behind Everton this weekend.
