To be fair Mikey, the coaches at everton have seen him a hell of a lot more than you, or anyone else on here. So i'm sure they are better placed to see if he was good enough or not.

Springthorpe was good and showed promise

Stupid decision

Another youth talent squandered

Can you think of a player who has been released by Everton in recent years who has gone on to prove them wrong?

Mustafi looking the most likely to do so but no-one else would have a sniff of our first team.

Well, when you kick a lad out in the cold that's going to happen sometimes

Imagine if someone like Jose Baxter had stuck around at the club and had been nurtured better during his time here?

When you tell a lad he's not good enough and send him on his way, he's already got a mountain to climb

How many players would have survived some of the treatment our youth prospects have had to endure?

In all my years as an evertonian i have only ever seen 2 reserve keepers play for the team and i think that was Paula Gerrard and Steve Simonsen. however they played because we were selling our first choice if i recall so they automatically got played.

Best young lad we had was Ruddy, and he was 4th choice for Moyes. I wonder if martinez only bought Joel because he was cheap and he had him last year? Makes sense to be honest but no measure of his ability.

Plus my conspiracy theory is that we only buy young goalkeepers when we want to look like we are active in the transfer market. We will be fine for 12 months or so, then no activity on the last day brings Billy the Fish in so we are mentioned on sky sports news.

A fair bit mate yeah

Enough to see that there was potential

When in goad name have you seen him play?!

From reading reviews and match reports he seemed ok. Nothing more than that.

Tadual seems to be the most promising keeper so this makes sense to me.

And Stanek.

The best thing about Springthorpe was that he sounded like he should be in a Monkey Island game.

Erm...

There's lots wrong here.

Gerrard and Simonsen were bought in for actual money. Quite a bit if I remember rightly. They weren't youth keepers like this kid.

We don't 'just buy a keeper to look active in the transfer market'. That's insane.

Yeah £1.5m and £3m respectively, I pretty sure that Simonsen was a British record for a goalkeeper at the time??
