ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

Football used to be such a simple game......

RAWK .."Another good post, LG, but I'll say one thing about the "half-spaces". We're playing, ostensibly, a 4-1-3-2 in attack, that in reality is probably more of a 2-3-3-2 or even a 2-1-5-2. Basically, Lucas has a lot of ground to cover. This is not a bad thing, but given that he's in central midfield pair rather than a central midfield three, the key question is not so much about tactics, but about what his partner is doing, and who his partner is. Gerrard doesn't have the explosive power to get up with pace and back with pace. Henderson doesn't have the defensive intelligence. In order for us to accommodate a front two of Suarez and Sturridge, a free-moving Coutinho, and a wide right midfielder, Lucas has to basically be paired with another Lucas, such that the formation becomes more of a 4-2-4 in attack with the fullbacks pushed up. For me, either Gerrard has to be disciplined in playing right beside Lucas and never venturing forward, or he has to be replaced by a defensively intelligent central midfielder who can coordinate with Lucas, but offer athleticism and touch going forward. We need, basically, to combine Henderson's legs, with Gerrard's talent, and a dash of Lucas' game intelligence. We made it work last season when we played the three together, because they complimented each other well in the 4-2-3-1. But now we have Coutinho, and two top-scoring forwards. 3-5-2 I think was an attempt to work around that, but it still left Lucas in a hole when Gerrard went forward too far. It's a tricky thing to manage. There may come a point, as I said earlier in the season, where Rodgers has to think more like a manager than a coach, and just put out a team that is designed to outrun the opposition - and that team won't include Gerrard.*"

Wow.

The excuses tumbling out of Brent now are pretty hilarious:

-He's had hardly anything to spend so they have no depth of squad
-Decent players go elsewhere in transfer windows
-He's had to replace good players who wanted out
-What he has spent has been on potential for the future
-He works under constrictions at LFC answering to a transfer committee...but 'that's ok'

...if I were a Kopite right now huge alarm bells would be ringing very loudly.

 The Kopites will love this:

"Hodgson unapologetic over Sturridge injury woe"

Roy Hodgson has no regrets over his decision to play Daniel Sturridge against Germany last month
http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/spor...land-manager-roy-hodgson-unapologetic-6363926

The England manager said: "Dan has pulled out of a few matches with us for injury reason. The first game he played (against Ireland) he got injured. It was important for me to, if you like, test his resolve a little bit. I suppose you could argue we did put his resolve a little bit to the test. I might have been guilty of putting that resolve to the test, but I don't apologise for it.

And I am delighted he did get out there, even though he maybe himself didn't feel 100 per cent because that means in future I will know I can trust him as an England player and he is not going to be playing when he feels like it - he is going to be playing when he's fit to play."

Sturridge's bad luck with injuries has continued since as he has been ruled out for up to eight weeks with ligament damage to his left ankle.
Hodgson is not concerned, however. "They are better getting injured now to be honest," Hodgson said with a smile.

Top popcorning by owl face there. Cap doffed.

its moyes-esque in excuses, i mean they are still in a good position, panicking now seems crazy!

I can see why he's doing it right now, tbh: he can hear the engines revving up behind him of real, bona fide CL spot contenders and knows they're about to come roaring past his team and stay out in front of them. He's just getting his excuses in early.

This article is hilarious, and not just because it quotes Rogers as saying Ilori didn't cost £7m and then immediately lists his cost at that figure.

This transfer committee is pretty odd, and Martinez was smart in declining to get involved with it. I suppose the idea s to prevent a continuation of the overwhelming ineptitude LFC has displayed in the transfer market over the past two decades, mixed in with the odd splurge on a megastar (for every Alonso there's been three Riera's). Good job they were there to vet the Allen, Borini, Assadi, Alberto, Aspas, Sakho and Ilori signings. Might've been £70m down the drain otherwise...

This sentence was interesting: “Hopefully in the future, maybe long after I am gone, he can prove to be a talent."

Please don't go, Bren.
