Kone Signs on 3 Year Deal

Eh? We've spent over that plenty of times. Chelsea bought Chris Sutton for double that amount 15 years ago.
...Ok so its not the bossest transfer ever but its not much for a striker is all I'm saying.

There will be at least 10 strikers who move this summer for similar or less money who will be younger and better players than Kone.

Also, here is something that may calm a few people. A few rumors doing the rounds on twitter (yes i know, i should stop right here but may as well post it) that the fee is 2 million up front with it rising to 5 depending on how many he scores. Does that please a few people?

Slightly off topic, but I reckon Martinez will get Jelavic firing again. Kone, if confirmed, is a decent if unspectacular addition to the squad. If Jelavic can double last years league goals, and Kone weighs in with his 1 in 3 ratio, thats 20 ish more goals maybe.

Lets see.

No issues with that, was just going on current form.

If he does, then we won't need Kone as much but better to buy him all the same.

He cant be as bad again surely? There was something going on with him last year. No idea what, but something was not right.

Extremely disappointing signing. 5m (which is about as high as we go in the transfer market) on a limited 29 year old with no resale value who doesn't finish as well as Jelavic or offer the same physical threat as Anichebe.

Kone is 5 times the player Anichebe is..... Vic will try hard and put the effort in but sadly he will never be a premier league level striker... he's championship at best.

Thats a bit of a sweeping statement. Any idea who these bargains are? Or will you only know that after they've proved themselves like Benteke.

To be fair, we're not full time football managers with a scouting network to advise us. It's a managers job to spot potential before the price shoots up.

screams to me as a safe transfer for martinez- someone who wont get us top 6 but little risk of flopping either- disapointing really thought he was gonna bring all this south american flare with him from "dithering" davy..

2 days in the job mate!

I'm sure Kone will do alright next year, score 8-10 goals and offer a good outlet up front. My problem with this transfer is that it's myopic on two fronts. One, it shows Martinez' short term thinking in spending that amount of money on a 29 year old striker. Two, it shows his lack of resourcefulness in going straight back to his old club when we have a position we need to strengthen, which at his press conference he implied he wouldn't do.

To put it into perspective, David Villa, RvP, Falcao, Cavani, Ibrahimovic, Drogba, and Lewandowski have all moved for similar or smaller amounts at some point in their careers than we're spending on Kone. Diego Milito, Negredo, Soldado, Rossi, di Natale, Dzeko, I could go on. There are reams of quality strikers out there, it's about being resourceful enough to find them. The most disappointing thing about this transfer is that Martinez does not seem to be, and hasn't displayed any inclination to do so, going back to his old club for a mediocre 29 year old with two months before the window shuts.

Martinez was never going to bring South American flair.

Why bother

This place is like a breeding ground for idiots

He has been in the job 2 days and has moved quickly to bring in a striker he thinks will fit into the style of football he wants us to play

Some on here are flipping out and acting like beauts, I am sure there's a good few in our fan base who are wanting Martinez to fail so they can say "I told you he was gash"

Kone isn't exactly the Negredo type of signing we were all hoping for. I think Moyes, as crap as he was, would have gone for a higher profile signing this summer if he was still here. Hopefully we can get some more impressive signings down the line.

Ok then smart arse answer me this

If its so easy to pick up a great striker for 5m or there abouts why didnt Moyes do it in his 11 years at the club?
