Perspective-the ten years pre Moyes

Some good points there, but we have to be careful in comparing performances in different eras.

Exciting? Not as much as the nineties, I agree. But then, the two games of that decade that really stand out for me are the last-ditch battles against Wimbledon and Coventry. At my age and with my blood pressure I could do without that sort of excitement thank you!

You are spot on, Stan. One cannot really judge different eras.

My reason for making that post is to counter the prevailing revisionism among many on this board that the 1990s were all doom and gloom.

Quite clearly they weren't.

It had its high points as well as its low points.

Not as many of the former, alas.....but hey, my ol' granpappy always used to say "if it wasn't for the bad days you wouldn't know a good day if it bit you on the arse".

Which leads me on the what were potentially the very worst of days.

Those two last day relegation scraps.

Now, like yourself Stan, I wouldn't like to subject my blood pressure to that again.

Bu-uuut.....having ssurvived those scares I would not be without them in my memory bank.

I have seen trophies bandied about at Godison, at Rotterdam and at Wembley.

And I loved every minute of it.

But on Wimbledon Day in particular I realised just how much I love my old club.

I roared myself hoarse that day and cried a river of joyous tears afterwards.

And twelve months later we were running round Wembley with the cup.

Just like a decade earlier when Howard's team was flirting with relegation until Kevin Brock intervened and the rest is history..

This is Everton....this is what we do....this is how we roll.

Fantastic memories of the 1990s for me, Stan.

The roll of honours and trophy cabinet would say otherwise. When we look back at past generations for our club, do we remember the season's in the 30s or 50 when Everton finished 5th, or 7th? Or do we proudly focus on the years when the entry reads, "League Champions" or "FA Cup Winners"?

I'm clearly into football for all the wrong reasons.

Of course we do, but I've put up the FA cup winners above, its a plainly evident that its not the same cup as it used to be. Money buys you the cup these days.
And most Evertonians will be able to tell you all about the relegation years, that the Moyes era won't be talked about as much as the dark ages is testament in itself to the quality of job he's done. It'll still be mentioned when fans look at the books, doesn't take a genius to realize that a string of relegation fights.. a new manager... a string of European nights = good management.
When he goes he's left us a far, far greater club than when he came, more pride, better players, better system, better everything. Why he is coming in for all the abuse he has I simply don't understand.

Great times, we've had a fair few under Moyes as well but you know what, you're kind of ignoring the obvious change in dominance. You mention the cup and how Moyes has failed us, but hasn't everyone who isn't at that time spending vast sums of money, here are the winners since Royles trophy. Bit of a pattern showing there?

As for mentioning wins against United ffs? Take a look for yourself.

http://www.evertonresults.com/manutd.htm

Hardly inundated with wins in the 90's were we?

In fact 4 wins to Moyes against 3 the decade pre Moyes. Probably not a great example, or are games only relevant when played away to a special selection of three or four teams? Are there only 4 games you remember per season, and then not even ones at Goodison?

Listen if your happy scrabbling around for the odd point required to keep us up, that's fine. Some of us just want more from our club. We are Everton after all.

Personally I enjoyed Moyes ability to take on the filthy rich clubs and embarrass them regularly, City hate playing us, Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool have all had their noses rubbed in it. I find it a bit sad that you missed the positives of the decade just gone, and instead moaned and whinged your way through it, its been a massively enjoyable rise from obscurity to being Everton again. One worth remembering for all the right reasons.
We won't forget this decade, we won't fail to see the improvement that happened here in the future, the difficulties Moyes faced will be well documented and remembered because this is Everton, and Evertonians know their history.
One cup does not equal a good 10 years. A good 10 years with no cup doesn't equal a great 10 years. But to move from dross to boss with little money against a backdrop of billionaire opposition is something anyone without a strange hatred for Moyes can get behind and be proud of. I know I am.
Everton are a big club again, and that is 100% down to David Moyes.

Another excellent post.

Your stuck in a time warp mate of when football was more equal. Clubs could build a good side through good management that could challange titles and win cups for little money.

Them days have long gone. EFC whilst a big club in the history books and past achievements are little more than a mid sized club with No money in the modern football era.

You expect too much. Not for Everton the name...but for Everton the modern era football club. We were on our arse mate in the 90's!! And at that point the money was only just starting to bear fruit for certain teams. Moyes taking us from where we were to where we are now given the billionaire era he's been battling in, well it's nothing short of miraculous. If not for him we really could of followed such paths as Leeds, man city (b4 money) and the likes who have fell out of the top flight never to return.

But oh wait can none of that happen to us because our name is Everton and we have a history god damn it!!

I take it you never want to "go back to" us winning Anfield derbies, then.

Well no, he's clearly talking about the decade as whole and not those two days which I imagine he enjoyed quite a lot. I know I did.

It's not an either/or thing. We can finish 6th and also win anfield derbys (we did under Royle).

Oh, so "only" winning twice at Anfield in the seven years before Moyes came is of no account, is it?

It's a funny kind of Evertonian whom just dismisses the fact we could win at Anfield back in those says.

Serious question.

Are you a Moyes fan or an Everton fan?

You're going to be watching out for United's results next season.

One day you and your ilk will look back on this period and righteously feel embarassed.

The way the Moyes cultists are behaving is reminiscent of the great pity party when Diana died.

I think Moyes did a largely good job, here but his obvious weaknesses reached a point where we're better off now he's left.

I think Royle was a better manager but I see no reason to have a go at a man who improved us over eleven years and has left us in a really good position for whoever takes over next. I've got what I wanted, moyes has left, why should I be bitter and mean spirited and not appreciate the good job he did?

I am along time Everton fan who wants more than two results in ten years to crow about. I've seen the best and the worst and the years prior to Moyes had me feeling we are going down fast, and whats with the pathetic pity party comment, and finally tell me o wise one what have we to be embarressed about regarding Moyes reign as a Manager.
