I hardly ever drink whiskey but over Christmas my mate had this at his house and I liked it. I don't think it's single malt though.

Well there are plenty of good pointers for you in here mate. Start of on a few miniatures from the different regions to get a taste for what you like and what you don't.
I think the only whiskey I've ever tried is Bells and Jack Daniels ( if they are true whiskeys?)
It's like comparing Everton to Stoke City mate. One has class while the other's rough as Suarez.
