Leadership

I've missed your point. Are you saying Neville is a poor leader or a group of adults playing football shouldn't need a leader?

The second part :) Well, sort of both. I think Neville is a poor player so I don't think he inspires excellence from his own example during the game.

I personally think the role of the captain is massively overrated and that teammates get much more inspiration out of a fantastic player playing at the top of their game or a player who is committed to the cause and leads via sheer determination.

To be fair to Neville, a few seasons back he brought a season to life with a blood and thunder tackle, but nowadays - rather than missing his leadership - I think the rest of the players will be relieved that their backs may have time to heal, after carrying the useless donkey for two or three years now.

If you're a great player who leads by example as well as a captain, you're far more likely to inspire the troops. Richie McCaw in rugby springs to mind, a man of few words, but legendary.

Captain is as Captain does...In top teams, besides the armband wearer there are always one or two or even three who are bossing everything eg Ratcliffe, Reid, Big Nev

But remember, the 'simple' cry on the field is 'nobodies talking to each other'
They probabley are...the real problem is No one is listening.

Old Geezzers anecdote warning. Nobby Stiles was no shrinking violet, prior to the 66 WCF he was in the bog putting in his contacts, Big Harold Shepperton came in, had him up against the wall by the neck and told him ' you're not going to let Alf down, ARE YOU?'....*half choked Nobby shakes head as best he could given circumstances*

I don't see ANYBODY in this team with the Mana to take it by the scruff of the neck literally or figurativly

There lies the problem

What we need right now is another Barry Horne.

A no nonsense, tough tackling leader who will put a shift in whilst also making sure everyone around him puts a shift in too. A type of player who epitomises the manager and brings the managers values and beliefs on to the pitch.

Im looking at our squad and apart from Neville we dont have this type of character.

I can see a rough couple of months ahead.

Any money on us starting well but having a stinker over the xmas and new year period?
