Ive never bashed him for the sake of it, ive always maintained that hes a good shot stopper and ive always said its not a postion we need to worry about, but hes always been terrible at crosses, hes always been terrible with shots from distance and hes always been capable of stupid mistakes.

Hes a goalkeeper, his mistakes are always gonna be glaring.

I sit behind him for 45 minutes most weekends, so I kinda watch him closely and his lack of talking to his defence has always made me cry.

Im not even saying get rid, im just saying hes cost us points recently, which as an Everton fan, annoys me.

I think people conveniently forget his great performances here - I have no idea how he suddenly has always been a crappy player. There are mood swings on this board about players I don't understand, and we use recent performances to make sweeping judgments about a player's entire history.

Fine, that's 2 goals he let in. The defense also hung him out to dry those games but we don't really see threads about that do we? Neville also has committed some bonehead fouls, and we are talking about that, but thankfully most people are looking at current form and not completely tossing out our captain.

Tim is not in form. I am willing to say that and call him out on it. He looks a little nervous and I don't know why. I also say this because he also has had those nerves recently for his National Team - so it's consistent.

I hope he recovers and regains his form (along with Heitinga/Distin). I expect him too, and would be surprised if he doesn't. But he is not the colossal crappy GK that people make him out to be here, I just don't believe that. To say "there's a reason United got rid of him" is a massive statement that I will give Neiler because at least he's been consistent with his drum banging.

If competition will help, fine. But I am not removing him from between the sticks. I just don't agree. Oh, and he made a great save yesterday to prevent one from going in, so he's not completely lost.

How many more cock ups does he have to make before you admit there's a problem?

You say the back line is to blame and in some cases that's true, but when they do muck up you have to depend on your goalkeeper to bail you out now and then.

Also, that Berbatov save was routine for me; near post, should be expected to save it.

What part of "he's not in form" in my post did you not understand? Just because I say he's not a crap GK and always has been doesn't mean I can't recognize his form right now. And what's interesting to me and shows it's form is that it has carried over to his national team, where he's usually a stand-out but has looked shaky of late.

Yeah, he made the save, bailing his back line out.

Bottom line: Mucha is not replacing him. Howard > Mucha. Until we have someone else that is a reasonable replacement, he's not going anywhere. I also think there are positions we need more than GK. Do we need competition for him right now? Yeah, I think that's totally fair based on his current form. Do I think we need another DM and striker more? Yes.

That's the difference.

Those are fair points Goat. I can't quibble with much of that, except maybe the shots from distance part. A glaring weakness in his game is crosses - I've always said that. He sucks at them at Everton and for his national team. Very consistent in that department.

I still don't understand why he doesn't talk to his D here.

Phil Neville has cost us four points in the past two games :@

No, he hasnt.

Should have said QPR and Fulham, conveniently forgot about the derby.

In those two he cost us an early goal. Against QPR by getting pushed off the ball like he was made of paper despite being the first to it, and then having the legs of a 90 year old while 'chasing' back. Boom 1-0.

Fulham he gives away a stupid foul at the beginning of the game. Boom 1-0 free kick.

He's more like Foster than Hart, Hart's world class where as Butland(and Foster) are grea tshot-stoppers but choose to punch when catching is the right choice and vice versa.

True. But with development he'll be more a Hart than Foster I think.

Incidentally I'd take Foster too. Great keeper.

Howard is prob just above average for the prem. He`s been making more mistakes than usual latley that have cost us.he can be very good some days but overall i`d give him 6.5 out of 10.I haven`t seen much of butland but from what i have ive not been impressed.Could just be another overhyped youngster to add to the list.

Holliet still had to run 90 yards and deflect off Jags to score.
Ruiz still had to bounce the ball off Howards back.

Indirectly, his "mistakes" cost us a goal, not directly.

i blame a dodgy sky sports rumour of a deadline day bid which was no more than an enquiry for this thread getting to 15 pages.

When you look at the other teams against for the european spots newcastle=krul, RS=Reina, Spurs=Friedl they are far better than Howard. But as others have said, centre midfield remains the priority in jan. However next summer I would really like us to sign Butland or another top prospect to give Howard some serious competition, something he at present lacks.

Both are well better than Howard. Foster dominates his area and communicates well with his defence. If Butland ends up as good as him and with us I'd be more than happy.

With what you'd pay for him and the amount of time he's got left in his career it'd be a good move.
