What do players actually get out of being "owned" by some third party? Aren't they just glorified agents?

The "agents" give the player alot of up front money in exchange for being able to sell the player to the agents highest bidder and/or European connections. Alot of players like deal.

does that not also knock on the head the idea that fernandes chose to snub everton last summer, as many seem to believe. it looks to me as though he was just sold to the highest bidder.

He hands a transfer request in, then man utd tell him to rot in the reserves, Money men realise the price will fall if they let this happen so they make the transfer happen so they capitalise from the highest price. I understand your confusion. But this is the big world and players do not pull the strings.

They wont let him rot though, thats the point. He will be sold because he is calling the shots. Very easy to blame agents but the players are a lot more clued up these days

If the club was not in so much debt then he would have no choice. The managers and the players have hardly any say in these matters nowadays. If anything they are bystanders. Unless the player is his own agent then they are just collateral.

Bizarre mate just bizarre. If a player wants to move on he will get his agent to engineer a move. Just ask Fat Arse Rooney

Sorry to take some time to post a response to this thread.

When the Fernandes transfer to Valencia broke, it broke on Reuters first. This is an article that I've found from that day http://www.portugoal.net/Valencia0708/Fernandes-Signs.htm

Dated 27th August it says:

Midfielder joins Miguel and Caneira at La Liga outfit

The Manuel Fernandes saga has finally come to an end as the player has signed with La Liga side, Valencia, and not Premiership club Everton, as earlier reported.

The U21 Portuguese midfielder has pulled a 180 degree turn to pen a deal with the Spanish club, joining fellow Portugal internationals, Miguel and Marco Caneira.

Manuel Fernandes last week seemed to have opted to rejoin the Premiership club, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell from January to May last season, but the English side and Benfica could not reach an agreement and Valencia stepped in to swoop for the player.

The La Liga outfit have paid 18 million euros for Fernandes, with half of that fee going into Benfica’s coffers. Pending a medical, the midfielder will sign a six-year deal with the Spanish club.

“I want to thank Valencia for the confidence they showed in me and I hope to spend many years in this team,” said Fernandes this Monday as he was presented in the Spanish city. “I spoke to Miguel and he told me that Valencia is a huge club, with possibilities to grow even more.”

“I have to respect my team-mates, but despite knowing that it won’t be easy I expect to become a regular in the team.”
