Everton are considering a move for Brazilian striker Jo, but have no immediate plans to formally announce a new contract for boss David Moyes.
It is understood Moyes and owner Bill Kenwright have agreed in principle a new deal for the Scottish manager, but both parties are now concentrating their energies on squad strengthening at Goodison Park.
But it is clearly accepted Moyes would not be planning a variety of transfer deals if he was not happy with his own personal future at the club, and the backing of the board on the transfer front.
It is likely Moyes - who has one year of his current contract to run - will eventually sign a new five-year deal, but with wages believed to be considerably higher than the £50,000 a week that has been speculated.
Moyes has been in charge at Everton for six years and he is likely to become a rarity in the Premier League with a contract that produces wages higher than any of his players.
It is understood no player in his squad is paid more than £50,000 a week.
Moyes and Kenwright are determined to break the club transfer record again during the summer, having done so with the £11.6million that was paid for Ayegbeni Yakubu last August - the third time they have broken the record since January 2005.
And they are now pursuing CSKA Moscow forward Jo - full name Joao Alves de Assis Silva - who has one Brazil cap and scored 30 goals in 52 games for his Russian club.
Moyes watched the 21-year-old play for CSKA against Lokomotiv Moscow a month ago. The fee could be around £18m for a player who is part-owned by Kia Joorabchian’s MSI group, who were involved in the deals that brought Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano to England.
Everton also had dealings with MSI over the initial loan move that brought Manuel Fernandes to Merseyside, the Portuguese midfielder eventually leaving to join Valencia.
Fernandes was back on another loan to Everton last season, and Moyes is still considering whether to attempt another similar move for next season.
There is the prospect of a loan for Jo, but more likely a structured deal spreading a fee over several seasons.
Moyes’ immediate priority is to find a replacement for midfielder Lee Carsley, who ended his six-year stay at Goodison Park on Monday when he joined Birmingham on a free transfer.
Moyes could pursue an interest in Chelsea’s Steve Sidwell, although Aston Villa are favourites to sign the former Reading midfielder.
Moyes was on a scouting mission to France last weekend, where he watched Marseille’s Cameroon international Modeste M’Bami in action against Strasbourg.

Looks like we really are interested in Jo. Moyes must be certain he's going to be a great player to spend 18 mil on him. I'm surprised about M'bami as well he's only small, I thought Diarra would've been the more realistic DM as he is 6ft 3.

i am not going to dismiss this....a couple of weeks ago i was talking to someone about signing arshavin and they said we arent going to be signing him, however we are getting some1 who plays in the same league as him but he wouldnt tell me who, so i never gave it a second thought. now i know that leaves a lot of room for minouvre but maybe, now that this rumour has surfaced he could have been right:unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure:

Don't sign him.

We don't need all that confusion on the training ground when someone yells "Joe !!!"

Silver Arse it is, sign him up, i can't wait to wake my neighbours yelling that out at 4am

Defo picking up these rumours, the Echo are saying a loan is possible and what with the 'company' he is owned by, i wouldnt be suprised if it is a loan at first.

i seriously doubt we will sign this lad but it would be much more realistic if we could loan, or pay in installments-like tottenham bought Modric for £16m but will pay in £4m installments over 4 years.

just seen this:

West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is ready to sell Dean Ashton and Anton Ferdinand in a bid to fund moves for Everton striker Andrew Johnson and Newcastle defender Steven Taylor. (Daily Mirror)

if we got £8-£10m for johnson we would only have to take around £8m from the budget, less if we payed in installments.

Just a thought,But will he get a permit to play as he has only one cap.I must admit if we got him it would suprise me as if we believe the budget is £20-£30 million and we need a few other players as well there is not enough in the budget to cover it.Ok if we sell AJ to the hammers maybe but then we might improve the team but the squad will stay at the same size which we all agree is to small.

I have bumped this thread as it was said today that Jo did talk with Everton AND Citeh when he came over(Radio 5 Live world football phone in). I honestly believe this has more in it than our chances of getting Arshavin. Don't know why, I just have a hunch(Not a Quasimodo type hunch either), I think it could happen.

I havent seen him play but i would love to know what type of striker he is! Is he an out and out box striker or a creative striker who could possibly play in the whole, or play furthar out in a less central role in a 4-3-3? I thnk if he sins and having 5 strikers on our books will give us an insight in how Moyesy plans to play in the future.
