Bit hypocritical surely.

Okay, I'll be clearer. When I say Rodwell takes no risks, I mean he pretty much does nothing at all of any attacking worth. No offensive/through balls, no driving runs and doesn't pull the trigger enough. He'd rather play a sideways pass. I for one, appreciate Gibson's occasional speculative through ball attempt or long range shot.

Rodwell has barely played a through ball in the four years he's played for us. Gibson was coming into his own at the end of last season. I thought he looked brilliant against Newcastle because he actually added to the attack. Something he'd clearly been taught to do in training which seems to be the long term plan for him. He was showing himself on the edge of the box for a shot pretty much every time we attacked. A great alternative to attempting crosses and through balls when they're not working out. This is something I'd describe as taking a risk.

But yeah, I'm beyond convincing with Rodwell. If he comes good, great. But I would put my life savings on him remaining the player he is now.

Its amazing how scoring goals and having the bit between the teeth can free the starting 11 up. We tonked Newcastle on the back of scoring goals for fun in the previous games, even Hibbert setup about 15 goals (exageration) during that time. So yeah, someone like Gibson, like everyone else, is gonna play with more freedom. But as most United fans will tell you, most of his long range shots hit row z. And personally, I'd much prefer to keep the ball from the opposition that attempt a hollywood pass to nobody - we do that from the back on a regular basis.

For all Gibson's occasional attacking forward balls...he got 1 assist. Rodwell did too. Rodwell scored more goals than him too. But he doesnt get forward. Could've scored about 5 goals in his 2 England games...but he doesnt attack much.

I'm all for labelling Jackie the lad with whatever people want. But holding up Gibson as the poster boy he's got to be "better" than is something I'm not too keen on as I think Gibson's performances and praise are heavily masked on the back of a improved team.

But its all about opinions.

Rodwell is badly slightly above average.

And Henderson is badly slightly below average.

Give the lad a chance, like. Henderson got a run in Sunderland's first XI and the heart of their team for a full season. For many reasons Rodwell hasn't had that chance.

Gibson isn't a world beater, that is reflected in the price and his being allowed to move. He isn't as creative as Gravesen, or as defensively astute as Carsley, he is a decent all rounder, neat and tidy mostly, and a definite upgrade on the hotch-potch we were trying. For every side with an amazing talent you'd pay the money to see alone, that talent needs the grafters picking up the slack to have the platform on which to perform. Gibson provides a bit of midfield stability, someone not afraid to pick the ball up from the back, look to play the ball forward FIRST instead of instantly to the side.
Think it is also worth noting, that this will be the start of his first full season with us, so that he has performed as well as he has at the drop of a hat is testament to his working hard and Moyes having faith in him to trust him instantly. How often is that the case???

So he's an upgrade from Neville or Heitinga because he's a midfielder? I've already mentioned that.

Everything else is a matter of circumstance. We needed a central midfielder in Jan due to injuries - Gibson came in to fill a hole, had no one to dislodge him for half a season, and kept with him. Rodwell doesnt get injured, Gibson doesnt get signed. Simple as.

We obviously see two different games and a universe of difference in players when we watch the match. Thats cool. Just one more thing, Moyes chancing him and sticking with him, how many other players has Moyes signed that stepped straight in?

Gibba will get a few this year from outside the 18.

He's got a sweet drive.

Rodders / Felli / Barkley has pants pointingly potent potential if ever our midfield could emulate THT.
