2025/26 David Moyes

I guess the question is, if he does well this season (European football or in the mix) and then does even better next season, would it make sense to ditch him even if he’s making consistent progress?
No, it wouldn't. But one would need to agree on the definition of progress - and that is a function, to a large extent, of investment.

The call right now is whether one thinks he can take us where we want to go or not. If the destination is simply one of consistent respectability, keeping him makes plenty of sense. If one thinks the destination is to win a cup and gatecrash the top six (i.e., something more), then I would say not. Others will disagree.

Plenty of fans are happy with being respectable and winning nothing. Others want more. Given we had so much less than even respectability when the club endured a financial and institutional meltdown, the former position is understandable. But it lacks fantasy and, in my view, does a disservice to our potential as a club and our historical standing. No reason a club of our size cannot consistently qualify for Europe and win a cup every so often - if the backing is there and the management is good enough. The backing was never there under Kenwright. Moyes did a great job for him (and the club, strangled as it was by Kenwright's control). But if the backing is there, the call is whether Moyes is the right man to maximise it. I would say no - but fairness demands he gets a chance if he earns it and manages himself out of the job in the worst-case scenario. Of course, some of us will say we wasted time being proven right in the end. We'd have a point - but if the man is getting us to a cup semi this year and a top half finish, he'll surely stay on another season. If he then takes us into Europe, he'll justify that stay. Win a cup and he shuts his doubters - people like me - up.

He can stay for as long as he likes if he starts winning pots.

Everyone wants us to be the best we can be and finish as high up the table as possible. Some of us have moved on from 50 years ago and live in the present reality. They know that this team has been on its arse for half a decade and our reputation is in the pits.

Players in their 20s do not care that we were successful 50 years ago. Our standing has to be improved to "midtable safe club" from "fighting relegation" to attract the quality we all want.

This fantasy manager that takes us from relegation battles to champions league spots with these players simply doesn't exist. Chasing the next magic manager is part of how we ended up in this mess.

Anyone upset with what Moyes is doing right now and talking about how he needs to be sacked if he doesn't achieve x, y, or z are just living in their fantasies and are better off starting up Football Manager and playing at it themselves.

He will stay as long as the Friedkin's are happy with the job he's doing and there's been no indications that they wouldn't be happy right now so all talk of his future is speculative nonsense.

Keep dreaming of them sacking Moyes lads, it's not going to happen.

Merry Christmas.

It's a good point, but Moyes' track record suggests he's uniquely qualified to do so. He did exactly that at West Ham under a particularly dysfunctional regime. Doing it here, by comparison, should be a piece of cake.

Now, you may disagree, but Moyes seems to be one of the best for doing well at legacy clubs circling the drain. It's a different kind of pressure from managing a Bournemouth or a Fulham as expectations are so different and it brings a lot more attention.

As I said, I'm a fair kinda fella. I am a Moyes skeptic, but I see no reason why, if he is making tangible progress, why he shouldn't get the chance to achieve something more than respectability. Realpolitik will demand he gets his chance. He can start by playing the first team against Sunderland, mind...

They were rubbish to relegated etc still attracted good players
They didn't have the PSR issues holding them back for years like we did.

One of those facts people conveniently forget while demanding we follow their example.

The other being that they went from 17th, to 11th then back to 14th before they started to get into Europe. That's three entire seasons something that people don't want to acknowledge while they demand Moyes do it in a single season.

I'm sick to death of impatient plebs pointing to Villa, Newcastle or Forest as if it has any relevance to our situation.

Lad your the worst whopper on here going on about agendas and narratives nearly every day when someone doesn’t agree with you, we finished 12 last season no were near relegation

With Armstrong coming back next summer (ideally soon and then returning to Preston end of Jan) and Aznou & Dibling at the minimum of our young players in the first team squad theres got to be a plan to have them each positively impact the squad and team.

We should, by season end have an idea of a nucleus of players who will go into next season with an eye on improving again.

Right now were seeing experience preferred over development and strange selections week after week.

He needs Europe or things need to be improved on player development at minimum. The player selection can be mad as well, KDH as a 10 makes no sense.

One of those 2 and im sure he'll stay.

Next season has to see the age of the squad dramatically drop. Cant continue like this season.

So, if he finishes "top half" 10th and gives us 3places better than last season you're happy with things finishing the season as they stand today?

£27.5mil on a non-scoring CF
£17.5mil on an injury prone midfielder
£15mil dead money on a loan
£4mil on 2 keepers who look awful

KDH & Alcaraz constantly used out of position

Dibling & Aznou zero on pitch development.

I think you must be using a cheat code for unlimited money on football manager if you think TFG have any ambition and allow the above with a 10th placed finish.

Things MUST improve. Whether thats getting more out of signings, developing young players and/or a far better finishing position.

How were his results the last 6months at West Ham?

If he improves on last season I am satisfied.

How much he improves on last year will determine how happy I am about it.
