2025/26 David Moyes

Then don't make a total balls up of the summer recruitment then. The lack of squad depth argument is utter nonsense imo, we knew about AFCON, we knew about the various key weak areas, and we did little to address them. We are sitting with our most expensive signing on the bench who can't get minutes atm.
Yeah but Simon, its not the Moyesiah's fault it the mysterious workings of the recruitment team that cocked up the summer window and there's no way that Moyes had the final say on any of these transfers!

Nonsense.

The direct comparison is to Everton, and our previous seasons.

Last summer we spent a club record amount.

Last summer we spent more than the previous 7 years combined. Thats without Grealish factored in, or a £17m obligation for Rohl.

With that comes expectation of some progress.

A better team, a better squad needs to do better. Otherwise, what's the point?

It currently is. Anything bottom half would be a disappointment considering 12th the season before last and 13th last.

Are we subtracting the £70m worth of centre back that we’ve been robbed of for the entire season so far, or is that a stupid question?

we’re tenth and still have spent less than others - we’re also playing catch up

we nearly went bust /
777

also on others who’ve spent in windows prior

we’ve had ONE

you know we’ve struggled for goals

had 5
first teamers out

and we’re 10th

let the build carry on

Hilarious.

Acknowledges we spent a club record last summer, representing investment of more than combined 7 seasons before it - before Grealish/Rohl - but apparently we can't expect progress on the last few seasons from a team the manager set an objective of Europe.

We've gone from Dyche and having to make big profits every summer to Moyes and club record spend but God forbid we expect progress on 12th.

If you don't improve after big investment, fingers have to be pointed.

This is all that matters isn't it? It's better isn't it?

The 7 Windows or 7 years combined just goes to show how we've destroyed the squad and robbed it of most of the quality it had in that time. That window was fixing 7 years of a lack of investment. 97 million net spend on 9 players is nothing to in premier league spending.

We are ranked 19th out of 20 for the net spend total over the past 5 years. A much fairer window to assess this squad than just the one summer window of investment and ignoring the context of how the squad was raided.

The way people talk in here you'd think no progress has been made since Moyes came in and clearly there has been. Everyone talking about how we have to sack him to progress... We are progressing. It just reeks of impatience or agendas against Moyes.

I'm not his biggest fan but some of it is just people with a clear agenda against him.

Doesn't include a £100m player in Grealish either.

So I would suggest that losing the best defender at the football club probably offsets the improvement from Harrison to Grealish, personally. Doucoure to KDH is an improvement, yes, that’s why we are performing better and have more points, but we’ve now lost him for an unspecified amount of time too. Along with our undisputed two best players from last season.

The team that we are able to field right now, is definitely not stronger than last season’s team. It’s actually significantly weaker.

Well no, its as simple as expecting the club to improve and progress on the last few seasons vs Dyche, Harrison and Co.

A reasonable expectation, all considered.

And Moyes would be the first to agree - after all, his objective is Europe.

I agree, having those players instead of Harrison and Doucoure has ultimately resulted in improved performances and results. However, we have now lost one of them to international duty as well as a key midfielder who we had available for the whole of last season, and we’ve lost Doucoure’s replacement to an injury. So over the next few weeks I expect to see these things taken into account when analysing our performances. That team we had out against Arsenal was no better on paper than the best XI we put out in the past two seasons.

At no point over the last two season did we have our 4 best footballers out at the same time. This is a circumstance that you just can’t compare with any former manager, because they never had to suffer it.
If Moyes doesn't take this squad to a better league finish than Dyche, a manager you quite justifiably vilified on this forum, then you have to say the season will have been a failure. A period of a few weeks without our key players is not unprecedented at this club, in fact it's rather standard. The team we put out against Arsenal wasn't a step down from what was available to Dyche. It was a weak team but Dyche, who I didn't want and was thrilled to get rid of, also had weak teams. Moyes simply has to outperform Dyche in both points total and league position by season's end or he has to be considered a massive disappointment.

But there has been progress hasn't there?

And isn't what he said this:

“This club should be challenging for Europe or be in Europe, but people need to give us time and understand how bad it's been in the last few years,” Moyes said, following a strong run of form.

He had money at Man United and ended up being outmanaged by Ole Gunner Solskjaer. Van Gaal, Mourinho, and Ten Hag all won trophies there. The Moyesiah won the Charity Shield.

I wouldn't give him another bob after last summer's debacle.
Yep the reasonable response to his disastrous summer spend would be to pull the drawbridge, boot him out in the summer and give the new manager the resources.

And he has progressed on that hasn't he?

In 12 months we are up 5 league places and 8 points better off.

Show me this Moyes quote about Europe you're referring to because everything I find it couched with asking for patience.
