2025/26 David Moyes

I don't think I agree that this very fair.

You need to remember where we were when Moyes came in. We were potentially heading towards the championship, and that is the base point you need to judge him against.

To say that someone who takes over a team fighting relegation, and doesn't qualify for Europe the next season has failed, is quite frankly, ridiculous.

I agree with you that Moyes has to make a choice over whether to prioritise results or squad development (every manager in the world has that decision to make), but to say that qualifying for Europe in his first full season is the line between success and failure? Nah, I'm not having that.
Look I get it, it’s big leap. But he’s quite literally developing nothing. He’s playing the same system he played 15 years ago. He’s playing one young player, Garner, in the position he’s most suited to. Two if you count Barry who has only recently been given regular starts.

I think you also have to remember Sean Dyche is really bad. The talent was never as bad as it looked. Some of what Moyes is doing is just basic competence, which is nice, but doesn’t mean he needs more time.

I do question how much he wanted them and how much they were the best available that would consider signing.

I don't think we need to get 8th or it's a waste of money, each individual player proves that themselves.
According to a recent article provided by Paddy Boyland for the athletic (he's pretty well sourced ) while delving into possible transfer activity in Jan, paddy also described the transfer committee setup that now exists instead of a DOF. Supposedly Moyes has final say on transfers even though he's participating in a collaborative process

He's played Tim too who's still young but I agree Dyche dumbed us down to suit his negative narrative

I don't disagree with most of this except for that he only likely needs to finish at or above last year's position probably to see out his final year.

100% agree with this.

Huge difference with certain fans aspirations (including my own) and TFG's.

I think this is a misconception tbh. There are players who will be swayed, fair, but that won’t prevent us from finding good players and finding players who represent good value for what the outlay would be.

Remember, you could go out and bring in super 'value' players. But those players may take 6-12months to adapt to the league, team or manager.

You may have super players the following season.

In the meantime, your best existing players may not want to stick around after a 6-12months drop off.

This is common knowledge.

In the summer, scouts provided reports and anyone on the committee could put names forward.

The committee was Moyes to pick the targets, Hammond to negotiate the deals and Kinnear to sign off on the costs.

That committee was basically Moyes with Hammond doing the old fashioned club secretary job.

Now we have added a couple of people who will join this committee.

We'll have to see if they can save us from Moyes.

@hetion Inigo Perez was a great shout.
The style of play is soooo Everton. Did you watch them in the Copa or something?

Big question mark is can he coach that style to a brand new team instead of one that had a bunch of players who had played under Iraola. God knows but if you can do the due diligence that implies yes he probably can, then he'd be a nearly guaranteed hit for a prem team I think

Those who expect Europe from this squad are mainly those who think Moyes isn’t good enough.

Ironic really as the only reason we may possibly get Europe is because we have a manager capable of extracting more from these players.

This squad is around 13/14 best in the league. Good enough to not get relegated imho, but one that off the back of a couple bad results would be looking over our shoulder.

If we get European football it’s because the manager has exceeded the squads ability.

For what it’s worth, I think we’ll finish 10/12 and I would mark that up as a good transitional season. We have been relegation battlers, like it or not over the past five years. This would represent progress.
To say it’s 14th at best is like the dychettes saying 17th was the best we could do. And that would be a good job 😂

Think as we’re seeing the league is wide open, we have enough talented players to be in the mix for 10th place. I don’t think we will be getting Europe, think Moyes being to conservative will eventually let us down. We’re already seeing what happens when we score first or concede first. It’s always been Moyes’s MO

Only thing id say is that his current squad, like ours, is old.

Need to see if he can build a young fresh team.

The squad isn’t better than 13/14. In quality and certainly depth.

The manager whether you like him, his style, the way he conducts himself, whatever, will out perform this squad.

He will get more from this squad than he should, and that is the definition of a good manager.

Do I want Moyes long term no…

Do I accept and realise that there has to be bridge to a brighter future? Yes.

You do not go from consistent relegation battlers, staying up on the last day etc - to Europe in one season.

Moyes is a solid enough premier league manager. We will finish 10/12. That is more than acceptable, so longs we finish 8/10 or above next year.
