The grounds you feared going to.

Elland Road
Old Trafford
Upton Park
The Hawthorns.
Stoke was a bit of fun getting back to stn after the game as was Ayresome Park.
Euston stn after any London game was a bit scary.

I've been told Stoke at their old Victoria Ground was hairy. Tales of folk being chased round the maze of terraced streets surrounding it.
They just used to go the graveyard over the road from the train station and throw stuff at you.
Never had the numbers to do anything as we usually had thousands up there .
Could get a bit difficult if you went by car.
Every team had lads so it paid to keep your eyes open at every ground , wrong place wrong time you could get be in trouble . Can't say I was scared of any ground in particular, few mentioned where pretty on top but other times you could go and next to nothing would happen.
Seventies was less organised no rules as such everyone was a target including ordinary fans and kids.
Had a few run ins at city , against Newcastle and was only about 13.
Leeds on the other hand for all the stick they get , told me and my cousin to get over the road keep quite. And they made sure we made the station safely, unfortunately for them they got ambushed opposite by Everton s lads, nothing I could do to help.

As you say early seventies wasn't organised the first time I went to Stoke we were in the Boothen which was the home end with a thin line of police down the middle.
The year after we were in the open end by the Victoria Pub,when I went in the pub the landlord had buggered off and Everton fans were serving behind the bar no charge for a pint

They obviously had long memories
I originally posted this some time back in the 'pies and pasties' thread.

Best I've had at a match would have to be the Cornish pasties at Plymouth in 1975.
Three or four small catering wagons were on the concourse outside the ground and were charging a kings ransom.
Each wagon was tipped over in turn by hoards of hungry blues.
Whilst some were 'allegedly' helping themselves to the days takings, I managed to grab myself two pasties. Winner:dance:
One of my all time favourite away games that 👍

Hated going anywhere near Millwall. Remember Charlton away, late nineties and twice got Millwall lot kicking of on us and bricks thrown at our coaches. Horrible people.

Bolton used to get a bit fruity to. Think it was a midweek FA Cup game at Goodison, me and my mate made it just in time to jump a black cab on Bullens road to get away from a bad night.

I would say most away grounds could be tasty, same for away fans coming to Goodison. I didn't fear going to away games but with some you just had to be a little careful and sensible. I didn't have many run ins but when caught up in it I would say my scariest were Newcastle (when they mingled in then kicked off), Wolves in the snow in the 70's, Man Utd league cup qf (77) and Cardiff in the FA Cup 77. All other grounds was head down, don't speak and was fine.
That very much mirrors my experience back then

A friend of mine, a Villa fan, got 2 tickets for West Ham v Villa in the 6th round of the FA Cup (1980) and offered me one of them. We went to Upton Park by train. In the ground a couple of shady characters (fairly obviously West Ham fans) stood behind us, the police were in the ground looking for West Ham fans in with the Villa fans. We said nothing as the police went past and the 2 blokes behind us showed us the knives they were going to use on us, but decided not to as we had kept quiet. Outside the ground afterwards mayhem, the Villa fans were being attacked as they left the ground. We managed to get away and walked around until it died down, and then went to Euston for our train. More mayhem, the West Ham fans were there together with Spurs fans attacking Liverpool fans (who they had played that day) and Arsenal fans joined in as they returned from playing Watford. Can't remember going to many more away games after that.

In the 1970s the usual suspects were rough: West Ham, Chelsea, Leeds, Manchester, but, actually every ground could be dangerous.
As others have said, Boro and Cardiff in the cup, were "memorable". I don't remember the date (any ideas oldies?) but after a night match at Wigan, at their old ground, all hell broke loose... I think every MU and Citeh fan around there turned up that night, too.
Anyone recall the Chelsea "Kensington High Street" affair?
One thing that did shock me was when my Dad (RIP) took me to Birmingham. I was probably about 10-12. On the walk back to the coach they attacked us and my Dad got punched. He was not being agressive or anything, he was just not a Brummie I suppose.
Years later, not saying we were particular hard, my mates and I were not really afraid. If we had been, I suppose we would not have gone to certain places. We were street-wise and stuck together. But also young, so reckless. We did not look for trouble (well, one mate did) but it was often unavoidable in those days and sometimes we did get our "revenge in first".
Rail and motorway service stations were often "lively", too.
PS. The thing is, Goodison and Anfield were terrible for away fans, too, and so at aways the locals were often out to get "revenge" on us.
