Last Film You Watched

Agree on Sinister, Exorcist is still one of the best, Texas chainsaw a classic that feels like a lost footage film, Near dark, not really spooky just a great film, Gonjiam haunted asylum,Rec the Spanish one, Poughkeepsie tapes , Hellhouse LLC

Seen the Exorcist, TCM, Near dark and Rec (Rec is very good). I’ll have a look up the others, they sound a bit hammer house is that the term?

Mrs Bluerobert has tasked me with finding the spookiest of films for this years Halloween film night. I’ve only recently started to enjoy some horror films mostly because I just find them not scary and as such really crap films.

Hereditary really got me into the genre. I’ve seen insidious and the Nun and they were a return to boring film form. Can any horror fans suggest anything “truly knicker wettingly spooky” as Mrs Bluerobert put it.

Just to add we’ve started watching a few over the last Halloweens and honestly I don’t think I’ll ever be spooked again

Only film that has made me ruminate on it afterwards was It Follows. I still think about it occasionally now.

Event Horizon scared me when it came out but I was, like, 16.

The Ring - the original Japanese version - frit me a bit when I first saw it, but it's a slow burn. Back in 2000 My fwb housemate and I had got back from the pub on a Friday night and were watching whatever was on Channel 4 while smoking some Js (Graham Norton I'm guessing). That finished and then this Japanese horror film started at like 11pm and we just got sucked into watching it. When it finished at like 1am we were both pretty shook by it. My housemate refused to sleep in her own room (which had a telly) and demanded to sleep in my room (which did not have a telly) which I thought meant I was gonna get some, it being Friday and all, but apparently that film, as well as being scary, was also a complete libido killer. So, yeh, not recommended if you're looking to get your leg over on Halloween.

Hellhouse is basically a cursed hotel, haunted asylum is what it says on the tin, Poughkeepsie tapes is serial killer scenario, thing with films is its a lot like music, it's individual taste , 3 recent ones people raved over were longlegs, weapons, 28 years later, I thought all 3 were poor

'It follows' is excellent, 'event horizon' is not,

was very original, really enjoyed it, the english speaking remake was ok.

There's a load of Japanese, Korean and Australian horrors I'm working through, I'll list a few when I get chance. Give 'Train to Busan' a go, I've got 'A girl walks home alone at night' lined up next I think.

I can’t remember if I’ve seen Sinister; the name rings a bell but I’ll have to check. Don’t breathe I think I thought that was a bit of a joke film because I’d seen the trailer for number 2 and it looked a bit meh

The first Don’t Breathe is very good, second one not so good, as you know what it’s all about by then.

Another couple :

The Hills Have Eyes - both versions.

Wrong Turn - Both versions.

I've not watched either version for years and years, but seem to recall that the Japanese version left the payoff right to the end, whereas the US version prematurely shot its scary load within about 20 minutes.

Dunno if you play computer games, but 'Alien Isolation' I still can't face. I think I got scared as a kid listening to the original war of the worlds radio broadcasts (not the ones in america at the original broadcast time) and then my tiny little mind made nightmares out of it, still remember em vivid today. Problem with a lot of horror is that it is very often utterly hilarious.

I remember getting up very early to go to a game in London, radio city were playing the war of the worlds album, by Jeff Wayne, I felt suicidal by the time I left the house

I've not played it and it's on Xbox which I don’t have. Any good horror games on the PlayStation?

Problem with a lot of horror films is they just descend into people running around and screaming. Even the ones that start with an interesting idea.

Did anyone find The Blair Witch Project scary?

I play pc, 'cos I'm a (checks earlier thread for notes) '60 year old nerd' apparently. No idea on playstation. The blair witch film I didn't find scary but the final shot was a kick a the knickers. A lot of build up for a one liner finish. Given 'Left 4 dead' a whirl recently, and the "people running around and screaming" aspect is very true to the point of being tiresome. Think I was hoping for some more involved puzzles or stealth aspect, as it is, the ai you have to work with is so stupid it's a non stop bulletfest. Tiresome.

Didn't find it scary, found it interesting in the way it was filmed and the publicity for it was good, if your genre is horror I feel it's a film you have to see

A girl walk home alone at night is Iranian, very good too

I did but I was 14 when it came out and haven’t seen it since so don’t know if I still would now.

My main issue with a lot of horror films is how they handle the “reveal” and then often just ignoring the rules that have been set up in favour of creating interesting set pieces. This is more of an issue in supernatural horror than in slasher type films. I think part of the issue is they have an interesting central idea but often don’t know how to actually put that into a coherent full length film.
