Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

I disagree. I think he's at the same level as Garner, who improved our CM upon his return last season imo. In fact, he may well be better than your Garner's or your Longstaff's. Garner wouldn't be scoring 18 goals in the Championship, that's for sure.
you’re very easily pleased. We all know scoring goals in the championship means nothing compared to the prem. for the record brownhill has played 111 games in the prem with 6 goals. Garner isn’t good enough for our midfield, I’d sell him tomorrow, he has a year left and no noise of a new deal. We sell for what we bought him for and that’s an 8/9mil profit, basically could get us a 40mil centre midfielder on a 5yr deal. Out midfield has been shocking for years now.

And if we go into next season with garner and gana and brownhill and Villa Tim as 3rd and 4th choice that would be horrendous.

Brownhill was at Bristol city till 24, then went to Burnley, relegated twice and nobody was interested in him. Think that says it all

I agree. I hate the 'do a job' mentality. Brownhill would compete for a first team place though. He'd definitely compete with the likes of Garner and '30 million Euros' Mangala.
We didn’t pay 30mil for mangala and neither did Lyon, think it was 17. He’s another one that wasn’t good enough.

I agree with a lot of that. I don't think Garner is great, but I do think he's a mid-table / bottom half prem player, which is what Brownhill is. I'd be onboard with acquiring Brownhill for free and selling Garner in order to facilitate the purchase of a CM that is a level above both of them.

We need to replace both Doucoure and Mangala though, and that's before even thinking of trading players like Garner. We do need to cut our cloth accordingly.

They have to be good players to create competition
No, you’re right you’re right. But I think there’s an overreaction here, as well as a little bit of skew on how good our current rotation guys are.

We absolutely need a first choice, long term CM to be purchased, no doubt there. CM was high on the list of priorities.

I look at Garner, Tim and Armstrong who are currently the ‘next guys up’. Tim and Garner struggle with consistency and fitness for 90 mins. It’s a massive ask for Armstrong to step up and you feel one more year on loan would be massive for him to get first team football.

When Gueye misses games, or our ‘new’ CM gets a knock, we need players that can reliably come in and play 90. Josh Brownhill is not glamorous, I agree. But he is the sort of player that will give the right type of consistency to keep it ticking. He’s not the type to lose you a game. He may not win it, but he won’t cost you.

Can’t help feel like the wunderkid crave is creeping in here. He scored 18 goals last season (am not expecting anything close in the PL), but if he was 25, I suspect some people who are not convinced would be creaming themselves. Players don’t disintegrate at 30 years old.

Brownhill is better than most of our current CMs, we need to bolster all aspects of the squad when opportunities present themselves. I’m also hoping it allows for Armstrong to get one more loan to continue his development (high hopes for that lad).

Let’s wait and see, nothing is done yet and this feels like a potential signing that will look good or bad in context to other signings. Would be disappointed if Brownhill was first team CM fix, would be happy if he was brought in to improve raise the floor of the current crop and allow for loans for our promising guys (I’d be interested to see Tim go on loan too but don’t think that’ll happen.)

The ideas of squad fillers and backups is a poor mentality because they cost the team when they play.

It’s about creating competition.

You could reverse this and say which quality players who create competition would be willing to come to us and run the risk of being rotated?

It seems like only the likes of City get away with that. Even the RS don't have a quality bench. Moreover, look at the likes of Harvey Elliott who wants to leave for 1st team football. Don't forget the World Cup year factor, too.
