Transfer Rumour Thierno Barry

Has anyone seen this guy play? His goal rate doesn't really inspire me to be honest.
No.

Looking at his season goal clips, he does seem to have that important poachers instinct, the yard advantage in the head that all good strikers have and the ability to finish a chance.

YouTube clips can be and are misleading sometimes to say the least, but you would hope the scouts have noted this if true with actual eyes on.

Not a great situation with Barry. More shenanigans like the other night and we'll get nowhere near the lad. Not entirely sold on the guy myself after twenty minutes of amateur scouting, but if our scouts are convinced it should have been done and dusted before a tourney imo -- even if it's dated from the First of next month.

You’re genuinely a bunch of mentalists.

99% of you hadn’t heard of him two weeks ago now want to splurge big money on an unproven striker because he looked good on YouTube.

It’s as though the past 9 years of Moshiri leading to where we are now didn’t happen. You’re the Reform on this fanbase you meth addled transfer junkies. Go and enjoy summer and check back in August for your own sakes.

He's French lad. Look at PSG. Boss young French attackers all over the show. The French national team, look at them. French*. Must be good. Sign him.

*No one mention Maupay.

No lad, come get on the Big Baz gravy train. We can make some room for you.

8 of those goals were for Basel before he joined Villareal late August.

Not sure what to think about Barry. I get that he is a player the club has followed for some time, but that doesn't make him worth anywhere near his €40 million release clause.

Everyone seems to like an underdog story, but it is very rare that players comes from absolutely nowhere and goes to the very top. Over time many of them will suffer from the lack of footballing education.

- Three years ago Barry had finished a season in French 5th division without impressing anyone.
- That summer he he was signed after a trial by the Beveren on second level in Belgium

Newly promoted Burnley bought Zeki Amdouni from Basel two years ago. He scored five league goals and Burnley have tried to sell him for some time. Barry was Amdouni's replacement at Basel. Not an upgrade for a struggling Basel team and after a season Barry was sold on for less than Burnley paid for Amdouni.

11 goals for Villareal is probably OK. Former Newcastle and Leicester player Ayoze Perez was their leading goal scorer with 19 league goals.

Last summer Wolves signed Strand Larsen from La Liga with a €30 million obligation to buy. He signed after scoring 13 league goals for Benitez' Celta Vigo team that was fighting relegation. Many thought €30 million for him was crazy, but he proved the doubters wrong scoring 14 league goals for Wolves. But €40 million for Barry seems a lot more crazy than €30 million for Strand Larsen.

My guess is that a lot for the noise around Barry this summer comes from his agents. And that if Villareal really rate him he'll get a new contract with more money and a higher release clause. If not he'll be sold for silly money.

I don't think it's fair to say he came out of nowhere. He's 22, he has a full season in La Liga and a full season in Switzerland. It's not as if he was tossing chicken at KFC two years ago.

Having said all of that, I've never watched the guy so I can't give my uninformed opinion. But he fits the profile of what we should be after, young with a decent amount of first-team experience.

Summer transfer thread can now truly begin now you are here.

I think the fee if reported correctly, is too much.
Am slightly uneasy about signing him assuming interest on our part.

Whether we will or not who knows but you make some good arguments there.

You can find reasons to sign absolutely no one and we do have to take calculated risks so can have too much as well as too little caution.

This would probably be our single biggest signing of the summer though so caution is warranted. We need this due diligence and devils advocate approach when they're deciding on making offers.

Is this genuine?

24/25 - 19 goals, 4 assists in 41 apps
23/24 - 12 goals 5 assists in 37 apps
22/23 - 20 goals 4 assists in 33 apps.

Who are we signing for circa £30m with a better rate?

Yeah, not done it at PL level but is showing he can adapt to different levels in his different clubs so far.

I know I will regret this, but I agree with @chicoazul...:(

Yes, he had a season in Switzerland. According to Opta the Swiss league is the 25th best in the world. It's a league where most Championship teams would dominate.

I can't help getting Højlund vibes from Barry. Young striker picked up from Austrian football by Atalanta. Good for Atalanta, but showing more promise than end product. Got his big transfer to a league he was not ready for and to a club that needed him to deliver from day one. The difference of course is that Højlund even after two poor seasons for Manchester United is younger, better and has higher market value than Barry.

The difference is that Hojlund was signed to be the undisputed starter.

Barry and Beto would rotate.
